Chic Summer Neutrals

Trying to survive the heat this summer has really helped to entrench an existing fashion trend of incorporating more neutrals into your closet.  Finding chic summer neutrals can be a difficult task, but this season it really isn’t impossible to find great summer neutral options that are distinctive while also being chic and stylish.  We should also warn you, that white is a huge fashion trend this summer so today in honor of summer neutrals, we are focusing on great white pieces that will be must haves for warm summer weather.

First, the ultimate feminine short sleeve top, the Adore top by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer is a top from Velvet’s baby jersey collection features a feminine cap sleeve with a slight pouf to it and a gathered collar in contrasting cotton fabric providing that added element of detail or fringe. This top is basic enough to wear with jeans and dressy enough to wear out at night.  Naturally, this top is available in White, a great neutral color.

Next up, the Buffy Drape Cardigan by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer, features a cotton voile drape cardigan with cotton around the neckline, shoulders and sleeves.  The contrasting fabrics really give it that added gauzy look which makes it the perfect beach vacation throw or cardigan. Part of Velvet’s Cotton Voile Collection.  The sleeves are 3/4 length and jersey cotton.  The cardigan drapes in front with longer length in front than in back.  This top is a great versatile neutral cardigan option that really can last into seasons with cool temperatures.  Available in White and Rust, a coral color, the white is the best option for a neutral color this season.

Finally, consider the stylish Pintuck Empire top by Zooey by Alice Heller. This bohemian style vintage empire waist top is truly adorable and also very comfortable. We love the contrasting cotton voile fabric on the sleeves and body with a gauzy shirting fabric at the bottom of the sleeve, the collar and the center of the bodice. You’ll love the feel of the 100% supima cotton combined with the cotton shirting fabric it feels truly comfortable as it fits loose adding to its vintage style.  It also helps to give this top a breathable fabric which makes it conducive to summer weather and of course it also works well for fall weather too. This top is also available in white our favorite neutral color this season.

As you can see, there are a number of great alternatives and options in white and of course there are other neutral colors out there for another post including taupe, beiges, ivory or cream colors just to name a few.   Neutrals have had a recent resurgence, largely, I believe because of the goal of searching for pieces with added versatility beyond just one season due to the prevalent budget cuts that plague the current shopping market.   Each of these options are also extremely wearable, comfortable and still manage to remain stylish despite the basic white fabric choice.

First, the Hi-Lo Tank top is a great tank for summer.  This tank top features bright blues in a floral pattern on the top and then with an accent flower and ruffle in a contrasting blue polka dot pattern around the left shoulder.  This tank also flares at the waist and features a longer length in back than in front which gives rise to the Hi-Lo name and of course provides added detail on a feminine tank top.  This bright blue top features Sweet Pea’s Exhale pattern with Polka Dots.  This tank really brings us back to retro vintage styles with great floral patterns and polka dots and best of all, this piece is a great example of modern vintage inspired style.

We also love the adorable pattern on the Criss Cross Tank top from Sweet Pea.  Here the mix of bright colors such as dark navy, lilac, light blue, and fuscia make this top a unique style with a feather pattern that isn’t too busy, but gives the top lots of detail and distinction. The criss cross at the bust and the empire waist that is so classic Sweet Pea and you can even see this similar style in the Surplice V Neck top.    This great tank from Sweet Pea features a bright, beautiful yellow background with a great black, orange Felix pattern.  With a black accent around the top of the top in front and back, this top is great at giving you a sexy summer look. Bohemian Dresses

Vintage inspired pieces have really seen a resurgence recently and one of the best examples of this are bohemian dresses.  The bohemian style dress can come in an number of forms and styles, but should have a few great elements to maintain the bohemian inspiration in a new modern style dress.

When I think of bohemian style dresses, I typically think of long length dress with flowing skirts and fabrics, potentially feminine patterns like flowers or even embroidery detail and something that isn’t necessarily fitted, but more focused on a loose fit.

A great example of a Bohemian inspired dress that pays homage to the vintage style trends while making this piece a modern new dress with new style trends as well is the Rhetta Long Dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This jersey cotton maxi dress features a low cut back which gives this maxi dress a dressier even sexy evening look.  Best of all this dress is also versatile enough that you could easily wear it for casual or daytime events as well.  This maxi dress features a simple, yet elegant fit and short sleeves.  Available in both black and malachite a teal blue color, this maxi dress is a must have for your summer wardrobe. It is a great example of a long draped bohemian style dress that certainly fits the flowing skirt criteria and the long length that is reminiscent of prior fashion eras.  This dress also features a great wearable jersey cotton fabric which makes it even more of a must have.

Another great example of a bohemian inspired dress is the Sanni Short Sleeve Maxi Dress also by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This is another great casual long maxi dress which features a button-up neckline and a tie around the waist to make this a t shirt style long maxi dress.   This fitted style is also very refreshing to give it a more feminine, fitted look. This dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer also features a light cotton fabric which makes it perfect for summer weather.  The belted tie in a contrasting brown fabric is a great way to break up an otherwise long straight maxi dress.  This dress also comes in a gorgeous Jasper blue green color.

Finally, another example of a bohemian style maxi dress is the Hollie Racerback Maxi Dress by designer Ella Moss in black.  The racerback lace detail around the shoulders is a great embellishment that pays homage to vintage and bohemian inspired elements.   This dress is another great blend of casual and dressy or evening and daytime as it really can be worn in either situation.  This style of racerback maxi dress is also unique which adds to the statement piece quality of this dress.  This dress utilizes a rayon fabric which makes it a dressier alternative for the bohemian style, and also makes it more luxurious feeling.

Each of these options are great options for Bohemian dresses and are all comfortable without sacrificing great style and current fashion trends while also incorporating retro fashion inspiration as well.

Designer Tee Shirts

designer tee shirtsTee shirts are always a great go to item particularly during summer when you often just need something you can throw on without putting in much thought.  Tee shirts are always a great casual alternative and finding designer tee shirts can be a no brainer when you factor in their style and great quality.

You can find tee shirts in a variety of styles including v necks, scoop necks, button ups, polos and basic crewnecks.  Some of our favorite designer tees include those from Alternative Apparel.  You will find many of the popular “boyfriend” tee styles that include polos color contrast to give each piece added depth and more detail than just your basic plan white tee.

The Alternative Apparel Heather Ringer Tee features a great heathered fabric that is ultra soft cotton and feels comfy and casual all rolled into one.  This same tee is available at Vintage Fringe in an army green color or a dark brown.  This tee features a crew neck and basic tee shirt style, but with great colors and fabrics and high quality.  This tee style is also available in the Basic Ringer Tee as well, but features alternative colors such as white with black trim around the collar and sleeves or a powder blue with red trim.  This features a basic cotton fabric and is a great everyday tee alternative that isn’t just your basic white tee.

Another option for designer tee shirts include tees with patterns or prints such as the Alternative Apparel Rainbow Basic crew.  This top features a great vintage style fabric in off-white with blue trim around the collar and a muted rainbow pattern on the front.  It is a great comfortable designer tee shirt that is of course not the simple basic white tee either.

Finally, there are a number of great designer tee shirt options with stripe patterns.  You’ll see wide stripes, narrow stripes and different types of contrast whether it be white contrasting colors or two tones of the same colors as possibilities.  The Stripe V Neck by Alternative Apparel or the Heather Stripe School Girl tees features great tee shirts that are a bit more dressed up than the typical crewneck tee.  They each feature colored stripes contrasted with lighter white shades and then trim around the collar or sleeves that utilize that solid color.  The Stripe V Neck is available in a Milk Chocolate brown color stripe and alternatively the Heather Stripe School Girl top which features a polo collar neckline and buttons in the front is available in Fern Green, Rose Pink and Linen Tan.

As you can see you can find great designer tee shirt alternatives that are all reasonably priced without sacrificing on great fabrics, quality or style.  Complete with distinctive necklines, colors and styles each of these tees are great examples of how you can find great designer tee shirts without breaking the bank or much sacrifice.  These are great tops that can all work well with jeans or even the right style of skirt this summer.

How To Make An Outfit

Putting outfits together can seem much more daunting than it really should be when you are scrambling to pair pieces together to make that perfect outfit.  To take the pressure off consider a few of these rules of thumb for tips on how to create a wonderful outfit.

Be wary of too much of the same color.  It is best to have outfits that pull good contrasting colors in so that it looks more natural.  As a rule of thumb, consider the color wheel and don’t pair too many strong colors together simultaneously.  You start out with your basic blacks and whites.  Black is the basic starting point for any wardrobe.  Black goes with just about everything although I do try and steer clear of pairing black with navy blue, yellow and orange.  Navy just shouldn’t go with black unless it is actually part of the pattern or print.  Otherwise, I would try and avoid a solid navy top and solid black pants.  As an example, the Boyfriend Buttonup Top by Splendid pairs navy and black together and it works really well.  Black and yellow just screams bumble bee and then black and orange just screams pumpkin or Halloween.  The next color I would weave in is a good navy blue outfit, brown, and a good grey outfit if grey is a color that suits your skintone.  These colors are a bit more neutral than black in terms of pairing with other colors and grey goes with just about any color if paired well and navy looks great with some pinks, greens, yellows, and some reds although you want to steer clear of too much navy and red unless it is the 4th of July.

These color options are just the starting point for how to start creating a great outfit, but you with this foundation you can then incorporate other colors.  Assuming you are dressing up for work, a business meeting or another event then you will want to keep in mind a few other rules of thumb as well.  I suggest adding in lighter colors for tops to add contrast to darker pants.  Some people like to wear solid black or all one color outfits, and I just think they get monotonous.  You will want to include pops of other color for accent and style to your outfit.  Stripes or patterns are a great way to break up solid colors and still keep in the same color family.   A good example of pairing pieces in similar colors would be wearing the Odora top by Velvet by Graham and Spencer with a grey pencil skirt like the Sintia Pencil skirt over a grey tank top with the Odora top in Botanica a lime green or in white to help lighten up the outfit.  Of course to complete the outfit you will want to include great accessories like a good belt, gorgeous earrings and a chunky necklace.

Creating an Outfit is really not that complicated if you start with a basic foundation and then work into incorporating other splurge colors or pieces to complement your foundational wardrobe.

Summer Fashion Trends

summer fashion trendsAs the temperatures rise, shopping summer fashion trends is in full swing.   You may have already seen many of these trends in stores or on fashion trendsetter friends, but consider a few of these great summer fashion trends that you can easily incorporate into your summer wardrobe.

First, maxi dresses.  These are just as popular as ever so if you had previously been wondering if this was a trend with staying power, rest assured that great maxi dresses are here to stay and are a prominent summer fashion trend.  Of course you can find a variety of great maxi dresses ranging from high end designer prints and fabrics to casual cotton pool dresses.  The key is finding the right maxi dress for your personal body type and fashion style.  Maxi dresses may not be for everyone, but if they are for you keep in mind a few great rules of thumb when shopping for the maxi dresses summer fashion trend.  First, be sure that you find a dress that works height wise.  You don’t want it to be too short and you don’t want it to be too long.  Each dress naturally has its own length so be sure to find a dress length that hits at least at the ankle and depending on your shoe choice hits you at approximately the ankle with shoes on.  Much longer and you will be tripping over it and much shorter and it isn’t a true maxi dress.  Second, be sure that you find a maxi dress that is figure flattering from top to bottom.  You don’t want to have bra straps showing and make sure that you don’t show too much cleavage or that it doesn’t fit so snuggly that you can see everything too closely.  We’ve all seen people with a dress that is so tight that you can unfortunately see rolls where the dress fits so tightly and that is certainly not the point of wearing a maxi dress.  A great example of one of our favorite maxi dresses is the Sanni Maxi Dress by Velvet that is a great cotton dress with a high slit in front.  It also features a button up neckline and a belted tie around the waist.

The second great fashion trend we have seen this summer is white.  Of course white is always a great classic color, but this summer you will see lots of white from white clothing to white shoes and white jewelry or accessories.  Of course this is a great time of year to celebrate white and we love the great options that are out there.  Eyelets and lace are also big fashion trends, but white is a perfect way to wear both of them as great statement pieces or complements to other colors.  We love the elegant Freda dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer in White as a great way to incorporate this summer fashion trend.

Finally, you may have noticed a lot of people incorporating feathers into their hair, but feathers as accessories are also a popular summer fashion trend.  Whether it is finding jewelry in feather shapes or jewelry with actual feathers you will see feathers in lots of great accessories.  You will also see a lot of feather patterns that will carry over into fall fashions in clothing as well.

As you can see, there are several great ways to implement this season’s best summer fashion trends into your personal wardrobe and of course with all of these ideas you are sure to find pieces that fit work well with many other pieces in your closet.

Grey Cardigan

Finding a grey cardigan can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack so to speak.  The are not as common as you might think, but they can be so great with excellent options to pair them with a number of great colors besides your basic white.  Grey is a great complement to pinks, purples, blacks, reds and even certain shades of blue and green.  Having a versatile option like a grey cardigan in your closet is really a must because of the variety of pairing options. Of course, grey isn’t a color that can be worn with every skintone, but it can be a great color and comes in a number of great shades so depending on your individual style and preferences can be a great alternative to basic colors like blacks and whites.  Consider a few great examples of different alternatives for grey cardigans.

First, consider the Ella Moss Victoria Cardigan. This versatile cardigan features a blend of great fabrics for added contrast including cotton voile around the shoulders that wraps from front to back. The balance of this cardigan is modal jersey fabric so super soft.  The bottom half of the cardigan is a looser fit and has a light flare.  It is not a fitted wrap.  The neckline is also gathered as you can see in the photo of the back of this cardigan giving it another layer of individual style. We also love the light Haze grey color.  It pairs so well with black, white, navy, purples and so much more. This cardigan is also dressy enough to wear to the office and casual enough to wear to run errands or out at night.  It is also lightweight enough to work for warm weather and is the perfect piece for layering in spring, summer and even fall.

Alternatively, the Splendid Variegated Stripe Loose Jersey Wrap also features a great lightweight, breathable fabric which is great for warm weather.  It is a little heavier than the Victoria Cardigan, but a great option with differing widths of stripes contrasted against a white background.  Here the grey is a Heather grey option which is darker than the Haze grey in the Victoria Cardigan, but a completely distinctive piece with a draped cardigan style in front.  The length in front cascades down to the waist with a higher more cropped fit in back.

As you can see, both of these cardigans are very distinctive and certainly not you’re basic styles or fabrics.  Each of these cardigans have the versatility to work just about year round and particularly in the summer months are great pieces to throw over a tank or short sleeve top on a cool evening.  Of course, grey cardigans are distinctive just as they are because of the unique colors and the versatility of the grey colors and you have certainly seen lots of grey elements in modern fashion trends in different styles and patterns.  Grey truly is a great color that in a cardigan is a great complement to a number of colors which in the current economy is a great way to stretch your dollars and save your budget.

Hot Pink Tops

Hot Pink Tops can come in a number of great styles.  We love the hot pink color because it is pretty much automatically a statement piece with a vibrant, bold color that looks great with just about any skin tone.  Plus how can you go wrong with pink the ultimate feminine color.  Consider a few great options for hot pink tops currently available at Vintage Fringe.

If you are looking for solid pink, then consider tops like the Alejandra Knot Top by designer Ella Moss.  This top features a gorgeous pink in a great feminine style. This top features a v neckline with a knot at the center for added detail.  The top also features pleats around the collar along with the empire waist and pleats in the back of this top.  The sleeves are also gathered at the cuffs giving it a fuller looking sleeve.  This top is a great fluid piece that is flattering and feminine and of course features a vibrant pink color.

Alternatively, consider the perfect beach vacation top the Cotton Gauze Scoop Neck with Tie Top.  This top by Splendid makes us feel like we are on vacation in the Caribbean! It is loose fitting at the waist and also has a loose scoop neck around the collar with a drawstring tie around it. For detail the top also features 6 white buttons as in the front so you can wear the top buttoned up or not.  The sleeves are also gathered and feature elastic at the cuffs. It is light weight and looks great over a tank top or bikini top in summer weather.  Of course is also comes in Strawberry a bright pink color.

Finally, if you don’t want a solid pink top, you can find great patterned tops by designer Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati as an example that weave in hot pink colors into their tops.  You may like the look of the Bell Sleeve Top by Sweet Pea which features a black and hot pink scroll pattern with a vivid solid pink detail around the neckline.  This top features flared sleeves which give rise to the Bell Sleeve name and a gorgeous neckline and pattern which makes this top a great statement piece.  There is also the Classic Surplice Short Sleeve V Neck top which features a beautiful floral pattern with lots of hot pink, browns and hints of purple and yellows.  This bold pattern accents a fitted top that is gathered at the waist and features a solid brown lining underneath.

As you can see, there are a number of ways to wear hot pink tops and a number of different styles and patterns to find them in.  Hot pink is a great color particularly in summer months when patterns and colors tend to be a bit brighter and bolder than other times of year.  You can also see that great designers have included other feminine details and accents so the best part of your top isn’t just the great color.

White Summer Dress

Finding that perfect white summer dress can seem like a daunting task, but consider several possible options for the white summer dress.

If you are looking for a great white summer dress, look no further than the Freda Gathered Waist dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  The Freda dress features a gorgeous v neck complemented by a gathered waist and flared skirt.  The gathered waist does really do a great job of separating the top of the dress from the flared skirt to give it a very classic style dress. It is great blend of fitted at the top and flared at the waist which also can be so flattering to your figure.

The white dress is such a stunning color and the color alone transforms practically any dress into a classy statement dress.  The Freda dress is also lined with an added layer of baby jersey cotton fabric which is so helpful with a white dress to ensure that it isn’t too sheer.  Since the Freda dress is baby jersey cotton so it is lightweight and breathable which is another essential element for a good summer dress.  It also has a truly elegant vintage vibe that looks like it just walked out of an Audrey Hepburn movie.  It also reminds us of the dress Kate Middleton wore in her engagement photos, although in a different color.

Beyond just this dress, there are a number of great options for ways to incorporate white dresses into your closet.  If you still haven’t found that perfect white dress consider utilizing a solid white top or skirt to accent with contrasting colored or patterned pieces and accessories.   Personally, I love wearing the Freda dress in White with bold accessories in black or red whether it be boots, big chunky necklaces, or the right belt to accent the waist.  In that sense, the white dress has a number of versatile options and gives you a number of options to wear it with great accessories and shoes.

Of course when you are considering a great white summer dress, you will want to make sure that it is not too sheer, that it gives you options for a variety of ways to accessorize it and of course that it fits you well to give you that confidence to wear it.   You can find such dresses by a number of great designers including Velvet by Graham and Spencer and many others.  Summer is the best time to shop for white and depending on your personal school of thought you can wear white dresses between Memorial Day and Labor Day, although many people prefer to wear white year round.  With the right accessories, a white dress could be a great year-round dress obviously depending on the style of the dress.  The Freda dress, for example, can work year round as it does have ¾ length sleeves which makes it very versatile.  A tank dress, however, may not be the best option for year round, but in any case you can certainly find a great white summer dress for your closet this season.
