Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer is one of our favorite designers at Vintage Fringe.  Today we wanted to spotlight a few of our favorite pieces in their latest collections and highlight some of the reasons why we are such big fans.

At its core, Velvet’s line centers around staple jersey cottons and comfortable casual styles; however, they have also expanded their collections to include elements of faux fur, lace, vibrant patterns, cashmere, and so much more.  Consider a few of our latest favorite pieces as examples of their fabulous wearable fashions.

Consider the Ruz Faux Fur Poncho/Cape.  This jacket truly typifies a modern approach that incorporates a gorgeous vintage style.  The Ruz poncho really reminds us of something you would see on any of the ladies in Mad Men.  It also feels as luxurious as it looks and in a sleek black color makes for a true statement piece.  True to the poncho style, the Ruz jacket is a pullover jacket and flares toward the waist.  This piece is a true paradox as it is bold and yet classic simultaneously.  Elegant ponchos are a big fashion trend this season and a great way to add a new distinctive feminine piece into your wardrobe.

Next the Odet Asymmetrical Hem Skirt features another fashion trend you will see this season with the asymmetrical hemline.  The skirt flares out at the knee with the cascading hemline and off-center seam that gives this skirt added depth and texture.  The Odet skirt also features a gathered waistline that is fitted, but not tight.  The sister to the Odet skirt, the Pia Long Asymmetrical Hem skirt features the same style, but with a longer length. Both skirts are comfortable, sophisticated and feminine which makes them great staples for your wardrobe his season. These skirts are also great options for dressy events as well as casual and I love pairing them with a top like the Giann Cowlneck top also by Velvet.

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Finally the Kayin Scoop Neck Dress is another great example of Velvet’s expanded collections.  This dress, like the Odet Skirt, features a rayon blend which feels super soft and adds to the comfortable feel.  The Kayin skirt features a loose gathered waistband and a wide short sleeve.  This dress looks stunning with boots and can also be paired with a belt.  It is available at Vintage Fringe in Charcoal and Navy, and is a great option for your fall wardrobe.

As you can see, Velvet by Graham and Spencer’s latest collection features a variety of distinctive clothing options incorporating the latest in fashion trends in a stylish and wearable way.  These few pieces are just a few great examples of the depth of style and fashion that Velvet’s lines have to offer.  Best of all, all of their clothing is Made in the USA, in Los Angeles in fact which in the current economy is a great advantage.

What Jewelry Should I Wear With Winter Clothes

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Dressing in colder weather can make accessorizing your outfits much more of a challenge.  Say no more as there are a lot of great ways to remedy the winter wardrobe blues and dress it up with jewelry.  To balance out the heavier fabrics and layers you will want to find pieces of jewelry that are a bit heavier and bolder than some you might wear in warmer weather.

One jewelry trend that works great with heavy winter clothes this season are the big, chunky necklaces and earrings in great contrasting colors that help bring attention to your neckline and add a hint of femininity to it.  Depending on whether you prefer warm or cool colors you may want to find great accent colors like reds, light blues or greens.  Wonderful accent colors like jade green or even coral pinks that are very in style this season.  Another great contrast color is white or ivory in large beads or stones.  You can find a variety of different styles of necklaces in long or short lengths depending on what you prefer and what works best with your own individual style and wardrobe.  Chunky necklaces work well with long sleeve scoop necks and can even work with other necklines that are popular in winter clothing such as turtlenecks.  We love the look of classy long bold necklaces with turtlenecks in the winter.

Long necklaces are a great way to break up the look of heavy sweaters or cardigans in the winter and are also great ways to accent heavier tops.  You’ll find a variety of styles of long necklaces that feature an oversized pendant on the necklace. These longer necklaces are a great way to break up the monotony of heavy textures and less skin that is characteristic of winter clothing.

Another great way to help break up the heavier winter textures is long earrings.  They really do help to bring attention up to your face and help lighten up the winter clothing layers.  Long hoops or other big earrings are my go to piece whenever I don’t have that perfect necklace to go with an outfit.  Big earrings are a great way to bring a little more shine and sparkle to your winter wardrobe.  We love the look of long dangle earrings with high necklines to help break up or spice up an outfit.

In short, the basic theme for finding the perfect jewelry to help accessorize any winter outfit is generally long lengths for earrings and necklaces and bold chunky pieces to help offset the heavy, thick textures and fabrics so prevalent with winter clothing.  You will want to find good accent colors that work with your typical wardrobe pieces and will want to make sure that you have a few good staple pieces.  When you can’t find the perfect necklace to go with your outfit you will want to have some good fallback earrings that help give your look that added sparkle and shine and help breakup the monotony of so many layers of clothes.

Long Sleeve Cardigans

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

It is cold weather time which means it is sweater time and this season cardigans have really become must haves for every wardrobe.  Cardigans give you so many styling options such as the flared look of the flowing cardigan or the tighter fitted cardigan.  They also come with long sleeves or short sleeves although predominantly long sleeves.  The short sleeve cardigan is a more modern look that is finding its way into more fashion styles and is great for layering, but the long sleeve cardigan will never go out of style.  Of course, today’s cardigans are nothing like the bulky cardigans of the 80s with lots of shoulder pads and that classic boxy look.   This season you’ll find everyone wearing a mix of loose and tight fitted cardigans, cropped and long, in basic colors or with patterns or embellishments.  Here are a few great examples of distinctive cardigan styles:

A modern long sleeve cardigan look by Velvet by Graham and Spencer the Eloise Winter Slub Long Pocket Cardigan has quickly become one of our favorites.  Part of Velvet’s Winter Slub collection that is so popular this season the Eloise cardigan is a great long cardigan option.  We love the long length that works so well with leggings or boots this fall/winter season.  The loose, open look of the cardigan which adds to the versatility of the cardigan gives you a variety of alternative ways to wear and accessorize it. Our model wears it with an adorable scarf and scoop neck top and jeans.  Don’t forget to notice the pockets in front too which give it an added element of distinction compared to other cardigans this season. The winter slub fabric is a great blend of texture as the fabric has variation which adds to the uniqueness.  Of course we also love the deep purple color called Damask.

The ultimate feminine long sleeve cardigan is the Heart Button Cardigan by designer Joy Joy.  This lightweight, long sleeve cardigan really does feature amazing feminine details such as bows on the heart shaped buttons down the front of the cardigan; another heart on the lapel made of a variety of patterned fabric covered buttons for an added touch of contrast; and gathered puff sleeves on the shoulders.  This knit fabric of this cardigan is light enough that it works really well in fall, spring or even summer.  We love wearing this cardi over our favorite summer sundress.

A modern cropped long sleeve cardigan is also by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer and that is the Paola Drape Cardigan.  Featuring long sleeves and a long flowing drape in front and a cropped length in back, this cardigan is a popular style this season.   An added distinction is the great metallic stripe fabric which features a contrasting heather grey and a sheer metallic stripe that allows you to make it dressy or casual depending on how you accessorize it.  It is so stylish and classy that you really can’t go wrong when wearing it.

We think you’ll agree that these cardigans are must haves this season and you will want a variety of long sleeves cardigans with different lengths and looks to work with your boots and leggings that will be part of all the best fashion trends this season.
