Celebrity Inspired Clothing

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

I’ve seen so many celebrities this season rocking a gauzy white shirt from Kate Hudson to Zoe Saldana, wearing a baggy or loose fitted white top can be a great way to create the perfect casual yet sophisticated outfit.  A white top is a great way to add in a clean crisp color and offset it with pops of color or jewelry to create that signature white top look.

The obvious choice is your basic button up boyfriend top style in white that looks great with a necklace with lots of color and a colored belt with jeans or a skirt or leggings.  The white top is really a clean slate piece that gives you the ultimate in flexibility to add in any color and you can literally transform that look with accessories each time you wear it.  You’ll see lots of celebrities rocking this style of top on a day to day basis and the classic white boyfriend top is a timeless piece.

As homage to that top consider the Montego Long Sleeve Henley top by one of our favorite designers Ella Moss.  This top features an empire waist and a tie in back to create a fitted look, if desired.  With brown wooden buttons in front at the base of the Henley neckline and at the end of the ties in front and back for added contrast and these details give this top a bohemian look as well.  The fabric is gauzy cotton which makes it a great lightweight summer piece and frankly something that can be worn year round over a tank and with brown boots and jeans as an example.

Another twist on the basic button up top is the Darvey long sleeve button up tunic top.  A fitted top with tunic length by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer features a baby jersey cotton fabric contrasted with a number of mother of pearl shimmery buttons.  Available in white and a variety of other colors in case you are looking for something other than basic white, but the classic white color works great as a substitute for the basic boyfriend style white top.  In addition, it gives you all sorts of versatile options for layering and accessorizing.  I wear this top over contrasting colors of Kelisha tank tops which are the perfect complementary length.

Of course there are countless options and twists on the basic gauzy white shirt this season.  You can find that classic boyfriend style top in white if that is your cup of tea or consider alternative style tops that can provide added ways to wear distinctive pieces while still giving you that same stylish look.  What I love best about gauzy white tops is really the versatility and alternative ways to accessorize these tops and help give each outfit a unique look and style while still wearing the same top.  The creative options are endless and really a great way to transform something simple into a statement piece or outfit.

Celebrity Clothing Styles

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

We all pay attention to certain celebrities clothing styles and fashion choices.  Each of us has our respective favorite celebrities and honestly I can love one outfit on a celebrity and hate another outfit on the same celebrity.  There are of course a few celebrities that rarely go wrong in terms of outfit choice.  This classy taste in fashion probably is more a reflection of their personal stylists, but I still love to think that some of my favorite celebrities have a say in selecting their personal style and having such great fashion sense.  One of my favorite celebrities that I love to follow their fashion choices and clothing styles is Reese Witherspoon.

With such a classy, sophisticated personality it is no wonder that her fashion style really does seem to be an expression of her personal inner beauty and confidence.  In watching her over the years with different hair styles and at different fashion award events, her style is always elegant and classy.  If you catch her in day to day outfit photos, she always manages to look sophisticated and classy while still looking casual and as if she is truly an everyday normal gal which perhaps is part of her overall appeal.

If you look at many of these casual everyday photos, Reese has her own trends and one of my personal favorite of her style choices are stripes.  She seems to love stripes and frankly wears them often and she looks great in them.  She frequently wears stripes in tops in a variety of colors and styles.

If I had a pick out a few pieces that I think Reese would love to wear at Vintage Fringe, I think she would love the Variegated Stripe Boatneck top by Splendid.  This great top features contrasting white and navy or red stripes in various different width stripes.  This top seems right of Reese’s alley and a great complement to her skin tone.

I could also see Reese wearing the Melbourne Puff Sleeve Front Tie Top by Ella Moss.  This cute short sleeve top features a v neck top accented by a tie and puff sleeves.  The top also features an elastic waist band so it has a gathered loose fitting look at the waist.  I love the white stripes contrasted by an oatmeal heather stripe.  A great natural look and style, I think these colors would look amazing with Reese’s blond hair.

Finally, for more of a winter look, I can picture Reese wearing the Trinity Cowlneck Top by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  Reese does tend to wear a lot of color and it is a great complement with her hair and skin tone and this top would work well with her body type.  A loose fitted top with a combination of stripe width, this top is a great stylish statement piece that Reese would look great in.

As you can see, stripes are a popular trend in clothing and Reese is certainly on board serving as a walking billboard for adorable stripe tops that manage to look stylish and classy while always looking great on Reese everyday.

Sporty Stripes

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Stripes are a great way to mix up the styles in your closet and a great way to transform a basic style top into a statement piece or transform an outfit.  While stripes are always preferably worn horizontally, they can be wide or narrow, contrasted by white or black or shades of the same color and in different styles ranging from tops to skirts.  We are mad about stripes and here are a few of our favorite examples.

First up is the Variegated Stripe Boatneck top from designer Splendid.    This long sleeve top features a wide boatneck with tiny colored buttons over the shoulder for added contrast.  The variegated stripe pattern features different stripe widths all contrasted by a white background.  The stripes come in either navy or red and are a great way to make this top pop.  The fabric is airy enough that this sweater is great practically all year round and is a tad sheer so it looks great over tanks as another way to accessorize and provide a little contrast.

The variegated stripe pattern is also found in Splendid’s Variegated Stripe Loose Jersey Dress.   This dress is a must have for summer and can even double as a swim suit cover up.  It features a deep v neck in front and back and a tie at the base of the v neck in front.  The Variegated Stripe features a Quartz contrast color which is a gorgeous pink color.  This dress is a great example of how to sport stripes in any context.

Another great must have for summer are Collective Concepts tops and tanks.  Featuring great sporty stripe patterns these tops also come in great fabrics that feel luxurious and are machine washable and so comfortable.  The Lace Trim Stripe Tank as an example features wide stripes in navy or red contrasted on an ivory background.  This tank has a loose fit and a flared waist giving it a comfortable fit.  Accented by lace detail around the shoulders and a racerback, this tank is very distinctive.  The stripe knit top features a short sleeve scoop neck top with either pink or green colors contrasted against an ivory background.  This top has a sheer fabric and looks amazing over a tank for added detail.

Of course you can also find stripes in skirts.  Consider one of our latest arrivals the Fanya Drape Skirt by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This skirt features a diagonal block of stripes around the waist and then an asymmetrical line that divides the skirt which then alternates into a horizontal stripe pattern.  If that sounds too confusing, you’ll just have to take a look at the skirt to see what we are talking about, but it is a great way to mix up the stripes and add a touch of flare to this skirt.

There really are endless alternatives for ways to find and incorporate sporty stripe patterns into your wardrobe and as you can see they really are a great way to transform simple style pieces into something distinctive.

Floral Print Dresses

Monday, May 16th, 2011

In your search for that perfect summer dress, don’t forget to include the classic floral print dress.  Dresses can currently be found in a variety of patterns, but good floral patterns can be a bit more elusive.  You want to find a pattern that isn’t over the top and sometimes floral patterns can be just that.

Consider the Cherry Short Sleeve Dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This dress features a sheer silk cotton blend fabric that feels light and airy on.  We love pairing it over a pair of leggings and worn as a tunic for added versatility.  The dress features a lightly plunging neckline and a brown tie around the waist for added contrast.  The floral pattern features blues and reds along with a tile pattern in back for added detail.

Floral patterns are great because they are always distinctive and unique.   In addition they always feature bright colors that blend well together.  The multiple colors also give you a number of options for colors to accessorize floral print dresses.  From shoes to leggings and jewelry you really do have a variety of ways to add accent to any floral print dress.

Another great example of a floral print dress featuring more of a retro vibe is the Mod Retro Tunic and the Retro Boatneck dress by designer Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati.  These dresses feature the same retro floral pattern with blocks of flowers juxtaposed on a black and white Spanish tile pattern.  The colors are in purples and blues and pinks giving a bright floral look on the style of each dress.  These dresses are great examples of different styles of dresses available for floral print dresses as well.  The boatneck dress with a tie around the waist is a great option for a more fitted look.  The retro tunic / dress features a 70s style sleeveless A line dress with a solid black stripe down the center for added contrast.  Each dress has a distinctive vibe and the floral pattern adds depth and character to the already stylish dress.

As you can see, you have a number of different options to find designer dresses with floral prints.  You can vary not only the floral pattern and colors but also the style of dress to create that perfect individual look you are going for.  We also love the ability to pair floral print dresses with so many options for accessories.  They are a great way to layer in solid color scarves, leggings, boots, shoes, jewelry and belts depending on the style of dress.   You also want to be sure to avoid floral patterns that overdo it.   While I can’t describe exactly what that means because it is so pattern specific, it generally is one of those you know it when you see it type of rules of thumb.  For all of these reasons, floral print dresses are a great way to express your own individual style and a great way to give your closet a pop of color and style.

Beaded Top

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

We started Vintage Fringe because we love details.  We hunt for clothing that pays attention to the details and love finding a variety of tops with different types of embellishments.  You’ll see beading, fabric embellishments, sequins, and even buttons as accents on tops and dresses.  Any of these options are great ways to add distinctive elements to your clothing.  It may be subtle or it may be bold, but whatever works for your wardrobe having tops with embellishments is a great way to transform simple pieces into statement pieces.

For beaded accents our favorite piece is the Keesha ¾ Sleeve V Neck top by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer features a cowl neck v neck top accented by beading off the shoulder.  This beaded detail really does take an otherwise simple top and transform it with just a simple cluster of beads.  I also love the use of beads as accents such as the Collective Concepts Racerback Flared Tunic Tank Top.  Here the beads are around the straps on the shoulders which are metal links adorned by black beads on both sides.  A great way to layer in details and really make these tops more feminine and even more of a statement.

Fabric embellishments are a great retro trend that is currently making a comeback.  They are great accents to wear on wonderful spring or summer pieces.  Another great example of this is the V Neck Tie Waist Tunic top again by designer Collective Concepts.  Here the embellishments adorn the v neckline in a beautiful, feminine pattern which really turns a simple top into a statement piece.  This top is perfect for wearing with leggings, capris or jeans.  As a sidenote, one of our new arrivals the Lucca Racerback dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer is a gorgeous way to see fabric embellishments on the perfect summer dress.

You may also see other accents or details like sequins or even buttons on tops this season.  The Scoop Neck Sequin top by designer Collective Concepts is a great example of the sequin details on an otherwise basic scoop neck top.  Here the sequin design is showcased around the shoulders so it almost looks like epaulets.  This top has an olive green fabric and the sequins are accented in ivory for contrast.   Alternatively, the button detail may surprise you, but we fell in love with the Joy Joy Heart Button Cardigan that features buttons for detail organized in a heart shape on the right side of this adorable cardigan.

As you can see, simple embellishments can really transform an ordinary piece into a statement piece and that is why we spend so much time focusing on the details or fringe.  Each of these examples are great ways to incorporate these details into your closet in ways that range from bold to somewhat subtle depending on the look you are going for.  You can find great pieces that really do incorporate great details into any type of clothing you are looking to add to your wardrobe.

Ruffled Shirt

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

One of this season’s best fashion trends are ruffles.  You’ll see ruffles on skirts, dresses, tank tops, and all varieties of tops.  Ruffles are a wonderful way to insert feminine touches to basic pieces.  They also have the ability to transform simple, basic tops into something more sophisticated and fashionable and are largely reasonably priced.

You can find ruffles in a variety of different styles.  There are the tiered ruffles , the accent ruffles around the sleeves, cuffs or collar, and centerpiece ruffles that are the focus of the top typically around the neckline.  We’ll present several examples of each of these styles and of course these are not the only ways you may see ruffles, rather they can be the most prevalent ways to see stylish ruffle shirts.

Tiered ruffles have become more and more available in tanks and tops.  Here the top features several layers of ruffles on top of each other in tiers.  Consider the 4 Tiered Ruffle Top by designer Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati.  This tank in either Rain (Blue) or Cranapple (Fuscia) is a beautifully feminine piece.  The ruffles start at the top of the tank and cascade down to about midway down the tank.  This is actually the perfect length for the ruffles because it still has a fitted waist so it is figure friendly and doesn’t make you look frumpy with layer upon layer all the way down.  You may see a variety of tops with similar tiered ruffles that may even be asymmetrical or diagonally placed on the top or tank.  Pick whatever style works best for you and your body type, but this is a great way to wear ruffles.

Next are the accent ruffles.  You’ll see them adorning hems and collars and are a great way to incorporate ruffles into classy shirts and tops or even dresses.  The Mae Ruffle Neck Tank top features ruffles around the neckline along with a tie at the neck.  This tank features raw edges along the sleeves and hem of the top giving it a casual feel.  The ruffle around the neckline is a great way to showcase the perfect amount of feminine detail that accents your face and neckline.  This is a more subtle way to feature ruffles, but also a great way to wear ruffles to the office or under a blazer or just by itself with jeans on the weekends.

Centerpiece ruffles are really a great way to bring ruffles to the forefront of your top.  You may have already seen great ruffled shirts the feature ruffles around the bib area of the top or around the bustline.  Often the centerpiece ruffles are centered around the buttons on a button up top or a v neckline.  In either case, I love wearing a tank underneath in a complementary color to add a bit more of a pop or focus on the ruffles.  My favorite example of this is the Zooey Ruffle Bib Top.  The perfect balance of ruffles and added details with buttons and ¾ length sleeves.

As you can see there are so many options and alternatives for ruffled shirts.  You really can’t go wrong with any of these styles and in fact you may want to have at least one of each for the different options each style has.

Tiered Skirt

Friday, April 29th, 2011

The tiered skirt can take a variety of forms.  Whether it is the literally tiered layered skirt featuring multiple layers of fabric or the latest trend with the peasant skirts to have them look layered when they are really one fabric gathered to create a layered look.  The peasant skirt has recently gained in popularity and is a wonderful casual option for a spring/summer skirt.  Peasant skirts can really take a variety of lengths ranging from roughly knee length to ankle length as the maxi dress length has recently increased in popularity.

If you like the maxi skirt length, you will see a host of skirts with long length in either the peasant skirt look or in actually layered fabrics.  Personally, I prefer the peasant skirt look as it is not as heavy and is easier to wear.  The peasant skirt is the perfect casual skirt that works well for weekends or casual events.  You can easily wear these skirts with flip flops.  The peasant skirt is naturally very comfortable and a great all around occasion skirt.

The tiered skirt featuring layers of fabric can come in many styles including multiple fabric patterns.  I’ve seen this done with a bohemian style look and I must admit, it is not my style as it seems to overdo the pattern.  The layered skirt is, however, something that I could easily see a Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City wearing and I think she did wear similar style skirts in various episodes of the show.  It is a bold and often dramatic statement and can range from casual to very dressy depending on the fabric, length and style.

Of course with these skirts there are a few rules of thumb when pairing them with tops.  As a rule of thumb generally it is never a good idea to tuck any shirts in with these flared bohemian style skirts.  Of course there may be an exception, but by and large it is not a good idea.  We like pairing these skirts with looser fitting tops such as the Zooey ¾ length sleeve V Neck top or the Zooey Ruffle Bib Top.  These tops are looser fits and have subtle details that balance out the flared skirt.  You would also want to stay clear of wearing tops that are too long as with the long length of the skirts long tops do not look flattering.

Whatever style of skirt and top suits your individual style, having at least one tiered skirt is a great addition to your closet.  If you are looking for just one such type of skirt then I would suggest that you go with a peasant style tiered skirt.  I love the Hilton skirt by Velvet by Graham and Spencer as a good middle of the road skirt that has a good length and just enough detail to be comfortable and stylish.  These skirts are a perfect casual summer go to skirt for so many occasions and really do balance the wearability with feminine style.

Empire Waist Dresses

Monday, April 25th, 2011

One of our favorite feminine styles are empire waist dresses.  They really have made a comeback in recent years and there are really so many great ways to bring empire waist dresses into your closet that it is hard to focus on just a few.  The empire waist dress really is a great style for women with a bit of a bust or with women who may want to hide or minimize their waist line. Personally, I love empire waist styles as to me the empire waist feels somewhat regal and really invokes prior vintage style eras of days gone by.

One of my all time favorite empire waist dresses which is a great piece for summer is the Martha dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This dress features a gathered empire waist bustline and a simple flared waist.  The dress hits just above the knee on most body types and is a great summer statement piece.  I love the Greenbean color as it really does stand out and really does draw you into this dress.

Another great statement piece empire waist dress is the Modal Jersey V Neck dress by Splendid.  Even in the basic black color, this dress does feature a wide v neck and a definite empire waistline which really does make this dress a classic statement piece.  It is also of course a fun, flirty summer dress that looks great with a pair of funky sandals and chunky, long necklaces.  This dress hits just above the knee.

The Odessa V Neck Maxi dress by designer Ella Moss is a completely different style dress that also features an empire waist.  This dress in a beautiful Waterfall color short sleeves and features a twist at the center of the waist to really set this dress apart.  Similarly, the Hollie Maxi dress by Ella Moss also features an empire waist, but here the neckline is accented by a lace knit around the neckline which gives this dress a sexy, flirty feminine touch around the top and still has a definite empire waistline.  The maxi dresses are great styles to work with empire waists with their longer length and are a great way to incorporate current fashion trends and distinctive styles.

Empire waist dresses are not necessarily for every body type, but if you have the right figure to pull off a great empire waist dress, they really are a great way to incorporate your feminine touches into your closet.  I love the fluid look of each of these dresses even if they have distinctive styles.  The connection of the empire waist naturally means that they have fluid skirts and a more flowing regal look to them.    In contrast to the fitted look of other dresses, the each of these empire waist dresses are a great summer style dress that really does work well with casual looks with just a pair of sandals or depending on the dress even feminine styled flip flops.

Black and White Dresses

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Black and white are great color complements when it comes to clothing and in particular dresses.  A big dress trend is a variety of distinctive patterns mixed with black and white.  You’ll find lots of special occasion dresses featuring black and white stripes, color blocking with simple black and white details, or a variety of other patterns contrasted with black and white.  The use of black and white as contrast colors really is an elegant, classy way to make a statement that draws attention, but doesn’t necessarily overdo it.

Consider the Chapel dress by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer as an example of a classy yet bold statement dress featuring a black and white pattern.  Part of Velvet’s Spanish Tile collection, naturally this dress features a tile pattern and a gorgeous fitted style with a v neck and a subtle knot at the center of the v neck.  This dress hits just at or below the knee and features short sleeves. It is not only available in black and white, but also red and white.

Certainly you can find a variety of distinctive styles such as the Chapel dress from a host of different designers.  Personally, I am very picky with patterns and like to find patterns that are not overpowering.  It is easy to get carried away and I think that less is more.  As an example of simple, yet great patterns consider the fabulous use of color blocking that looks great with simple black and white.   The use of wide stripes in contrasting colors is another great example of simple, yet statement piece black and white dresses.

If you haven’t found that perfect patterned dress in black and white, consider the options of utilizing a solid black or solid white dress with contrasting white or black accessories.   I love the Freda dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer in White with black accessories whether it be black boots, big black necklaces, or the right black belt to accent the gathered waist.    We love blending black and white and in particular love the look of wearing the black Lija skirt with the Nona Ruffle top both by Velvet.  This look paired with a wide black belt looks very put together and so polished.

As you can see, whatever look you prefer there are so many different ways to incorporate black and white dresses whether it be pairing a skirt and top or finding a patterned dress.  Black and white are really such great classic colors that work wonderfully independently, but work so well together for any occasion or any outfit.  Whether you are looking for a simple or outrageously bold look, black and white dresses are a great way to implement any look or style perfectly.  The black and white color combination is also far more accessible than many other patterns and is always so easy to insert into your wardrobe as everyone always has basic black or white accessories that enable you to dress up or down whatever dress or style you select.

70’s Vintage Fashion

Monday, April 18th, 2011

For many, the 70s were a fashion trend that people either love or hate.  One of the best things about modern trends is that the finding elements of decades past or vintage style elements in modern fashion is really much easier than you might think and in many cases bring retro styles back in improved ways that work in current styles.  When I think of 70s vintage fashion I think of short skirts, bold colors including lots of color blocking all with a certain edge of modernity or bohemian style. Consider a few of these great pieces as examples of how modern designers and styles incorporate vintage trends into wearable modern dresses, tops and sweaters.

As an example of modern designer pieces that are part of our current style, but still incorporate vintage style elements. Designer Sweet Pea  by Stacy Frati features the Mod Retro Tunic  which I think is a great example of new 70s vintage fashion.  This top screams vintage style.  Made by Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati, a designer that loves to work with patterns, this print is totally retro with bold colors and patterns.  In addition, the style of this tunic looks like it just walked out of the 70s and yet today would look so hot with tall boots to really bring a vintage style to the modern day.  The Retro Boatneck Dress in the same pattern is a more conservative style than the Retro Tunic, but is another great vintage style piece.

The Ella Moss Baja Tie Waist Sweater is another great example of 70s vintage style fashion.  This bohemian inspired piece pays homage to modern, yet retro styles and includes a white knit with a multi color stripe around the hem.  The loose tie waist can be styled however your individual style prefers.  True to retro style this top also features a Henley neckline or split v neckline.   The Baja Tie Waist Sweater is a great piece with a subtle look compared to the bold colors of the Mod Retro Tunic.

Another retro piece by designer Ella Moss is the Ella Moss Miley Striped Cardigan featuring bold, but colors.  This adorable cropped length cardigan features knit around the shoulders in three stripes with different colors contrasted by either a sold blue or candy apple red contrasting solid knit.  The bold colors and stripes invoke all sorts of retro styles and pieces and make this a great statement piece cardigan.

Each of these pieces is an excellent example of utilizing vintage styles in modern fashions and in distinctive ways and pieces.  As you can see vintage elements can be found in a variety of pieces from dresses or tunics to sweaters and in a variety of different styles and different designers.  I love the fact that each of these pieces has that retro flair, but yet still blends in perfectly in modern styles.   Even if these pieces aren’t for you, hopefully they will give you inspiration to find additional vintage style pieces that do suit your own individual style.
