Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer is one of our favorite designers at Vintage Fringe.  Today we wanted to spotlight a few of our favorite pieces in their latest collections and highlight some of the reasons why we are such big fans.

At its core, Velvet’s line centers around staple jersey cottons and comfortable casual styles; however, they have also expanded their collections to include elements of faux fur, lace, vibrant patterns, cashmere, and so much more.  Consider a few of our latest favorite pieces as examples of their fabulous wearable fashions.

Consider the Ruz Faux Fur Poncho/Cape.  This jacket truly typifies a modern approach that incorporates a gorgeous vintage style.  The Ruz poncho really reminds us of something you would see on any of the ladies in Mad Men.  It also feels as luxurious as it looks and in a sleek black color makes for a true statement piece.  True to the poncho style, the Ruz jacket is a pullover jacket and flares toward the waist.  This piece is a true paradox as it is bold and yet classic simultaneously.  Elegant ponchos are a big fashion trend this season and a great way to add a new distinctive feminine piece into your wardrobe.

Next the Odet Asymmetrical Hem Skirt features another fashion trend you will see this season with the asymmetrical hemline.  The skirt flares out at the knee with the cascading hemline and off-center seam that gives this skirt added depth and texture.  The Odet skirt also features a gathered waistline that is fitted, but not tight.  The sister to the Odet skirt, the Pia Long Asymmetrical Hem skirt features the same style, but with a longer length. Both skirts are comfortable, sophisticated and feminine which makes them great staples for your wardrobe his season. These skirts are also great options for dressy events as well as casual and I love pairing them with a top like the Giann Cowlneck top also by Velvet.

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Finally the Kayin Scoop Neck Dress is another great example of Velvet’s expanded collections.  This dress, like the Odet Skirt, features a rayon blend which feels super soft and adds to the comfortable feel.  The Kayin skirt features a loose gathered waistband and a wide short sleeve.  This dress looks stunning with boots and can also be paired with a belt.  It is available at Vintage Fringe in Charcoal and Navy, and is a great option for your fall wardrobe.

As you can see, Velvet by Graham and Spencer’s latest collection features a variety of distinctive clothing options incorporating the latest in fashion trends in a stylish and wearable way.  These few pieces are just a few great examples of the depth of style and fashion that Velvet’s lines have to offer.  Best of all, all of their clothing is Made in the USA, in Los Angeles in fact which in the current economy is a great advantage.

3 /4 Length Dresses

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

When shopping for dresses it frequently seems like the challenge isn’t just finding dresses in the right color or pattern but also finding dresses that are the right length.  You may want a dress that is short or even tunic length or a super long maxi dress and unfortunately finding that perfect length can often seem like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.   With the resurgence of short skirts and maxi dresses this season finding much longer dresses is much more accessible, but if you are looking for something that is in between the ultra long length and the short dresses about the knee consider a few of these great ¾ length dresses.

The Malina V Neck Tie Dress is a great ¾ length dress that is a perfect combination of beautiful and versatile.  It is part of Velvet’s baby jersey collection so made of super soft jersey cotton which allows you the flexibility of wearing it to casual functions as well as dressing it up with accessories for dressier occasions.  It is lined with a second layer of cotton so it is a little warmer than your basic cotton dress.  The dress also features a tie at the base of the v neckline which is a great feminine touch.  The dress also features an empire waist giving it an added fit with an additional element of distinction. It is a basic black which makes it a great classic dress and has long sleeves and of course it is 3/4 length.

As another example of a great ¾ length dress consider Velvet’s Chapel dress which features a beautiful Spanish tile pattern.  The pattern can be found in either black or red.  This dress is fitted and the fabric is a rayon and lycra blend which gives it just the right amount of cling and fit.  The dress also features elbow length sleeves and a v neck with a subtle knot at the base of the v. The pattern really sets this dress apart and is a great blend of distinction, but not over the top. The dress of course also features that ¾ length and is absolutely stunning on. Alternatively, for similar versions of this dress in a solid color consider the sister version of this dress is the, Anais V Neck dress, again by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This dress is a similar style, but it is a solid color and is available in eggplant a deep purple color with a hint of blue.  Again this dress is fitted and features a rayon lycra blend giving it cling.

As you can see, each of these dresses gives you a distinctive look and is a great mid-calf length option for your wardrobe.  Another alternative to a mid-calf length dress is a longer or mid-calf skirt.  The mid-calf length skirts are very popular this season.  We love the Fanya skirt as a great flared skirt that hits well below the knee. It also features an asymmetrical hem for added distinction.   Of course you can also add length to a dress look by wearing leggings underneath.

If more of a slim cut legging would suit your style better, try the Swoosie Knit Leggings by Velvet. Wouldn’t this be so cute with a long tunic t-shirt? The soft cotton and elastic waistband are super comfortable and would easily switch to a Christmas dinner outfit with a sparkly top and blazer.

Tights and Leggings

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Tights and leggings have quickly become essential elements of the modern fashion wardrobe.   You frequently see them with skirts, tunic length tops, and dresses and they work perfectly with high boots, regular boots or even ballet slippers.  The look of an outfit with leggings or tights has become a fashion staple and is certainly something that you will want to consider when you think of great ways to incorporate this trend into your own wardrobe.

At Vintage Fringe, we currently sell leggings from Velvet by Graham and Spencer and have found them to be a great quality, fashionable legging.  You really do get what you pay for with leggings and what we love is the fabric and fit quality with the Swoozie Legging by Velvet.  These leggings are part of Velvet’s baby jersey collection so they are very soft and comfortable to wear.  Currently available at Vintage Fringe in great basic colors like Black and Grey, these leggings are long and work perfectly with boots.

When you are looking for the perfect pair of leggings you will want to be sure and consider both long and cropped leggings.  We love them both with different styles of outfits.  Cropped leggings are perfect for warmer weather and look adorable with ballet flats. Especially cute under shorter dresses, these leggings are great staple leggings that you will want to have in a few basic colors.

Tights are great accessories too, but personally I prefer leggings because they last longer.  Inevitably, I snag the tights or get a run in them, so when I have the option I prefer leggings.  You may also want to consider Spanx which has tights with panty hose like features like control tops.

When you are shopping for leggings, you will want to be sure and get a few pairs in staple colors.  Of course you will want a pair of leggings in black.  You cannot go wrong with black and just like any other fashion piece you will always default to the basic black.  My second choice for getting into leggings is either a grey or brown.  Both are colors that accessorize well with all sorts of other colors.  Grey pairs wonderfully with purples, reds and blues and of course works well with blacks.  I love the look of grey leggings with a black dress and black boots.   A good basic brown works perfectly with warmer colors like taupe, other shades of brown, pinks, whites, and some red or blue shades.  Once you have covered the basic colors, then we suggest adding other splurge colors like navy or purple that may not go with everything you have, but fits exactly with that one outfit.

As you can see, we have really come to embrace the tights and leggings trend and think that it really is a trend that is here to stay.  The distinctive look of adding leggings or tights to an outfit is a look that we have really come to love and think you will find that leggings are a great comfortable way to incorporate a little added edge into your wardrobe.
