Finding a grey cardigan can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack so to speak. The are not as common as you might think, but they can be so great with excellent options to pair them with a number of great colors besides your basic white. Grey is a great complement to pinks, purples, blacks, reds and even certain shades of blue and green. Having a versatile option like a grey cardigan in your closet is really a must because of the variety of pairing options. Of course, grey isn’t a color that can be worn with every skintone, but it can be a great color and comes in a number of great shades so depending on your individual style and preferences can be a great alternative to basic colors like blacks and whites. Consider a few great examples of different alternatives for grey cardigans.
First, consider the Ella Moss Victoria Cardigan. This versatile cardigan features a blend of great fabrics for added contrast including cotton voile around the shoulders that wraps from front to back. The balance of this cardigan is modal jersey fabric so super soft. The bottom half of the cardigan is a looser fit and has a light flare. It is not a fitted wrap. The neckline is also gathered as you can see in the photo of the back of this cardigan giving it another layer of individual style. We also love the light Haze grey color. It pairs so well with black, white, navy, purples and so much more. This cardigan is also dressy enough to wear to the office and casual enough to wear to run errands or out at night. It is also lightweight enough to work for warm weather and is the perfect piece for layering in spring, summer and even fall.
Alternatively, the Splendid Variegated Stripe Loose Jersey Wrap also features a great lightweight, breathable fabric which is great for warm weather. It is a little heavier than the Victoria Cardigan, but a great option with differing widths of stripes contrasted against a white background. Here the grey is a Heather grey option which is darker than the Haze grey in the Victoria Cardigan, but a completely distinctive piece with a draped cardigan style in front. The length in front cascades down to the waist with a higher more cropped fit in back.
As you can see, both of these cardigans are very distinctive and certainly not you’re basic styles or fabrics. Each of these cardigans have the versatility to work just about year round and particularly in the summer months are great pieces to throw over a tank or short sleeve top on a cool evening. Of course, grey cardigans are distinctive just as they are because of the unique colors and the versatility of the grey colors and you have certainly seen lots of grey elements in modern fashion trends in different styles and patterns. Grey truly is a great color that in a cardigan is a great complement to a number of colors which in the current economy is a great way to stretch your dollars and save your budget.
Just because 2010 is now in the rear view mirror, doesn’t mean that many of the same fashion trends will carry on into 2011. Today we want to focus on some of those continued trends because we know that sometimes you need to see that a trend has staying power and isn’t a fad in order to start to incorporate it into your wardrobe.
Trend to stay number one is leggings. As spring rolls around the corner, you will want to have a pair of cropped leggings in your closet. Much like capris, this trend has staying power and will likely be around for many seasons to come. We’ve done prior posts discussing just leggings and what basics to have in your closet, but we suggest having a good basic black long legging and a basic black cropped legging as a starting point. Then we would suggest adding in the right complement colors depending on your wardrobe such as browns, blues and greys. We can’t say enough about the long legging in the cooler weather as it is such a great piece to wear with boots. The cropped legging is also the perfect accent for warmer weather and works really well with ballet flats and long tunic length tops.
The tunic length or loose fitting top is trend number two. You will see this trend in many spring fashions this season. You have a variety of options for such tops including the wide boatneck sweatshirt top that narrows at the waist, the long and fitted top which can range from a v neck to a cardigan and the belted or drawstring waist top as a few examples. This spring, for example, you will see lots of patterned peasant blouses with ties at the waist that is a continuation of elements of the ruffled loose boatneck top of seasons past.
Another trend that will be around for seasons to come are the short mid-thigh dresses that have become so popular. Whether you like to accessorize these dresses with leggings or wear them with high boots, this dress trend has staying power. These great dresses come in a variety of styles and include a variety of elements including ruffles, zippers, empire waists and much more. One of our favorites is the Burca dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer which features a black wide neckline with the body of the top that gradually narrows to the waist with a tighter fit. Complete with a chunky zipper in back for added detail, this dress is a total statement piece. It has short sleeves so it really does work for several seasons.
In short, the dawning of a new decade doesn’t mean the end of a fashion era. You will still see many fashion trends from 2010 continued in 2011. For many of you who may like to adopt a bit of a wait and see approach to shopping for trends, we hope that you will be able to get in on the trend before it is too late.
Finding the perfect lightweight cashmere cardigan sweater can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack. It is often difficult to find just the right cardigan and then to find one that is made of lightweight cashmere can seem impossible. We have found it much easier to solve this dilemma by searching for pieces that have cashmere in them. The best part about cashmere is the luxuriously soft feeling of the knit. We have also found that you can find some great pieces that include knits other than cashmere to give you that soft luxurious feel. Consider a few of these great cardigan sweaters as examples.
First, the Laurie B. Milan Sweater features 30% cashmere blended with nylon and viscose. The blended knit still has the softness of cashmere and the great viscose knit that is silky soft as well. This light-weight sweater knit is a great short wrap cardigan features a tie that can go in front or in back depending on how you like to wear it. It also features a lightly gathered seam at the empire waist line giving it added elements of detail. In addition, the wide ¾ length sleeve something you don’t see on every wrap these days. You’ll love the rich Truffle brown color and the ivory Parmesan color too. This sweater is certainly versatile and works as a great substitute for a blazer at work or to throw over your tank top on a cool night out.
The viscose knit is actually one of our favorite substitutes for cashmere and of course it is much more economical. In our opinion the viscose actually has a silkier feel than the cashmere. Viscose is made of a blend of natural and man-made components that can be made into a rayon fabric. Viscose rayon has a great silky appearance and soft texture and yet breathes similarly to cotton.
Consider the Audrey Wrap that is made of 78% viscose and 22% nylon. It has a smooth, silky texture that is so soft and luxurious to touch. Of course the Audrey Wrap also made by Laurie B. features a great wrap design with a faux wrap at the base of the sweater with a contrasting color shimmery tie around the waist. The cuffs and the waist are fitted giving the wrap a great hugging fit. Our favorite aspect of this wrap is the fabric. The viscose blend makes for a great fabric that you seriously won’t want to take off.
Finally, the Gable Stripe Cardigan also by Laurie B. also uses a viscose blend to give you a great feeling knit fabric. This distinctive cardigan features a dramatic contrasting zipper that is front and center in this distinctive cardigan, the Gable Stripe grey and black pattern looks so classy and elegant. Laurie B. still manages to weave in fashion forward elements with the dolman flared sleeve on this sweater, a scoop neckline and the contrasting black trim around the neckline and cuffs and hem. Again you would not believe how luxuriously soft the knit on this sweater feels. It is also made from a viscose, nylon blend with 78% viscose and 22% nylon so of course it feels super soft and very comfortable. One of our favorite looks is wearing this over a long sleeve black top with a black skirt and boots in the winter.
All of these are great examples of lightweight sweaters that incorporate cashmere or a great alternative to cashmere to give you a luxuriously soft lightweight wrap in a distinctive style.
Its sweater season, but at Vintage Fringe we are tired of the basic v neck sweater or frumpy cardigan and instead find ourselves searching for unique, modern sweaters that help us create our own individual style. Today we want to focus on some of our favorite styles that are not the run of the mill sweaters you’ll find everywhere else.
One of our favorite distinctive sweaters is the sleeveless turtleneck sweater. Turtlenecks are certainly timeless pieces and are a great look this season and frankly just about every season. Sleeveless sweaters are perfect for warmer climates or seasons where you may not need a full coverage sweater. The sleeveless turtleneck is such a stylish look and they are not as easy to find which consistently makes them distinctive. With the right wrap or cardigan, you could also create a great style by pairing the sleeveless turtleneck sweater and a wrap for versatility.
Another great sweater option is the wrap. There are a variety of different wrap sweaters. Some are cropped, some are open, some are flared in front, and some are extra long. All of these various styles are popular and totally in this season. One favorite sweater is the Rumba sweater by designer Laurie B. The Rumba features a puffed short sleeve which is not something you find everyday on a sweater. In addition it features a simple straight back, but the front features a snap in the middle, pockets on each side and a longer flared front. All of these elements really do make this sweater one of a kind and a great year round sweater. In the summer we wear it over a ruffle tank and in the winter over a long sleeve top with boots and jeans or a skirt. This sweater will quickly become your favorite go to wrap or sweater just in case it might get chilly.
Finally, a heavier sweater, but another style that is extremely fashion forward is the Moonlight Cap Wrap Sweater also by designer Laurie B. This wrap also has a cropped sleeve and a tie at the waist. This sweater features an oversized wrap in front that we think looks best when it falls naturally creating a wide v. The tie at the waist features belt loops at the sides to keep it in place. This fashion forward sweater looks great with boots or leggings and looks great over a long sleeve scoop neck top.
Collectively, each of these sweaters is a distinctive style which we love adding to our wardrobe. All of them feature short sleeves or no sleeves and are perfect for warmer weather which makes them so versatile. Typically the when you shop for sweaters you’ll see variations pattern or color and slight differences in style. These sweaters, however, are not the run of the mill sweater you’ll find everywhere and in addition both the sleeveless turtleneck and the Rumba wrap are perfect year round. When you think of your next sweater purchase, we’d encourage you to seek out similar distinctive sweaters that are function, flexible and fashionable as this perfect blend of characteristics will help you find a sweater that is one of your favorite go to sweaters.
Splendid 8 Button Cardigan
It’s an undeniable and unexpected fashion trend that has become a must have for every wardrobe…the long cardigan. Today’s cardigans are not the cardigans we used to see on Mr. Rogers or your Grandpa, they are actually the perfect layer for almost every occasion. Some of our favorite summer/fall cardigans have more of a lightweight feel than a jacket and are certainly more versatile. Cardigans can also be paired with so many accessories from scarfs to leggings to skinny jeans.
At Vintage Fringe we have numerous cardigans to choose from. My favorite cardigan is Splendid’s 1×1 8 Button Cardigan. What I love about this cardigan is the waist band at the end of the long cardigan. This added detail flatters every body. I can wear this cardigan anywhere with anything. I actually wear this cardigan every time I fly because it is the perfect fashionable and lightweight layer that can cover some of my midsection flaws and let’s be honest, most of us have a few flaws we would like to cover up.
Splendid Cotton Bamboo Cardigan
Another favorite cardigan I also adore is the Cotton Bamboo Short Sleeve Cardigan also by Splendid. What I love about this cardigan is the added seam detail which is so hot this season as well as the flared cut to the short sleeves that actually slims the look of my arms. This cardigan is fun to wear and especially with the pocket detail that only looks cute with a cardigan this length.
