At the outset, pairing shorts with sweaters seems like a completely crazy outfit that you would typically see only on a fashion runway. While it certainly isn’t a trend we would want to wear every day in the summer, done properly it can actually be a great way to create a distinctive look in warm weather. We must warn you, however, that this look is not for the faint of heart. If you don’t love this look and don’t feel comfortable in it, then spare yourself the embarrassment and don’t try this at home.
Of course the success of this look depends on the specifics of each sweater, each pair of shorts and your individual body type. As an example, pulling it off with short shorts often works best with someone with a slender torso and long legs. It is also crucial to make sure that the sweater length works with the short length. For example, if you’re going for a preppy look then a lightweight cardigan sweater over a ruffle tank looks adorable and very classic with knee length shorts or capris. We also love to vary the length of the sweater with a long length sweater over shorts that are slightly longer than the cardigan or sweater. As an example, consider the Cotton Bamboo cardigan by Splendid as a great example of a long sweater that looks great over a short sleeve top and then with shorts that match the length of the cardigan.
Long cardigans and wraps are extremely popular this season and mixing them into your summer wardrobe is a great way to add additional texture and depth to your outfit and help to vary the length with the shorts. There are some great lightweight cardigans or wraps that would work great with both short shorts and longer shorts like the Sartee Drape Cardigan by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer. This cropped length cardigan pairs well with longer length tops or tanks and would look great with short shorts or longer shorts too.
In essence, the key to rocking a great outfit is always the ability to wear it with confidence and if you are looking to really step out with a bold look you can mix short shorts with a long cardigan or sweater. It is certainly not very easy to pull it off and requires the right body type (preferably that long torso and long legs) and the perfect pieces, but it can definitely work for you if you are comfortable with such a statement outfit.
Lately, I find myself leaning toward longer shorts and always have a wrap or lightweight cardigan in my purse during summer months as you never know when you are going to find too much air conditioning! Ultimately, whatever your fashion preference, just make sure that no matter what outfit you are wearing you always want to be confident in whatever you choose as that is the defining characteristic of a successful outfit is the ability to exude confidence when wearing it.
Spring is just around the corner and this spring you won’t want to miss out on a variety of great fashion trends that you may want to incorporate into your own wardrobe if they suit your individual style. Even if you ultimately don’t decide that some of these trends are for you, you will definitely want to know what is out there just in case. In fact, as a shopper who considers myself fashion forward, I must admit sometimes I wait it out until I see some of these trends lasting beyond one season before I incorporate some of them into my wardrobe. So if nothing else, consider these trends for what you will and then utilize them as you see fit.
This spring you will continue to see the groundwork of a resurgence of neutrals and earth tones. We think you will actually see more of these colors in the Fall of 2011, but we’re already seeing lots of khaki or white colors in jackets and wraps, cardigans, tops and dresses. You will also see lots of these colors with a variety of patterns of stripes ranging from wide stripes to very narrow. You’ll see a lot of neutral tones and stripes in accessories like bags, scarves and shoes.
One of the most popular styles this season for tops is the tie neck top. These stylish tops can be found in a variety of fabrics although we’ve seen them primarily in sheer fabrics. The tie neck top is a great retro look that is super feminine and yet another great way to incorporate the scarf trend that will continue to be prominent this spring.
As with the other accessories trends, the high-waisted belt will continue as a trend this spring and summer with more skinny / narrow belts instead of only seeing the super wide belts that are still prevalent. Since I am generally not a proponent of the sewn in belt accessories, I think that having a few go to belts in basic accent colors and in different widths will be a stylish and economical way to spice up your wardrobe this spring. You will also see lots of tie belts around the hips or even creating an empire waist line.
Bohemian style or peasant blouses will also be a must have for spring fashion this year. These loose style tops come in a variety of styles featuring elements like ruffles, patterns, drawstrings around the neck or waist, embroidery, buttons, and much more. The loose flowing look on top will continue to be popular and stylish this spring.
As for pants, the trend with skinny pants and leggings will of course continue this spring although with cropped lengths. You will want to have a few pairs of basic colors of cropped length leggings and then once you’ve covered your bases spring for a couple of splurge accent colors for kicks. You will also see a variety of long length skirts and long ruffled skirts that will be popular this season. We’ve seen many of these long almost ankle length skirts or dresses with ruffled layers in bright spring colors like purples and corals which are going to be must have colors this spring. In short, there are a variety of trends to observe and choose from when shopping this spring. Regardless of what you see out there, be sure to make sure that whatever styles you incorporate we suggest finding your own voice in these styles to really help accent and create your own individual style because that is the number one most important piece to making every piece in your wardrobe a statement piece.
Designer cardigans are the perfect piece to wear this time of year. Cardigans have come a long way from the puffy think styles of the 80s and now you find the modern versions include lighter weight fabrics, distinctive buttons or no buttons, no shoulder pads, and additional trim or details like pockets. Some of our favorite designer cardigans have even transformed into short sleeve versions that are perfect for layering over long sleeve tees or work great over short sleeve tops in warmer weather.
Consider the Cotton Bamboo Cardigan by Splendid. This cardigan made from 70% cotton and 30% bamboo features short loose sleeves, hints of white around the trim in front and as accent in the back and pockets. Without buttons, this cardigan gives a loose look that helps it look slightly less formal, but the style itself gives it a modern edge. The Cotton Bamboo Cardigan features a long length that falls well below the hips.
Another contemporary cardigan style by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer is the Eloise Winter Slub Long Pocket Cardigan. This long sleeve flared cardigan is another one of our favorites. Part of Velvet’s Winter Slub collection that is so popular this season the Eloise cardigan is a great long cardigan option. You’ll love the long length that works so well with leggings or boots. The loose, open look of the cardigan which adds to the versatility of the cardigan gives you a variety of alternative ways to wear and accessorize it. Our model wears it with an adorable scarf and scoop neck top and jeans. Of course we can’t forget to mention the pockets in front too which give it an added element of distinction compared to other cardigans this season. The winter slub fabric is the perfect blend of texture giving the fabric variation which adds to the uniqueness.
One of everyone’s favorite designers Ella Moss features the Kylie Bust Tie Cardigan. This cardigan is a great dressy piece. Made with lightweight cotton knit which gives this top a sophisticated, sheer look. With a tie at the bust line you can adjust the fit and look of this cardigan to suit any occasion. We love wearing this with a tank in warm weather and then with a long sleeve top in colder weather adding to its usefulness. The empire waist looks very flattering as it is loose enough and sheer enough to ensure that no one looks frumpy. Of course, Ella Moss is a great sophisticated designer that is known for designing modern, yet wearable designs.
As you can see there are a variety of different designs and options to consider when shopping for Designer Cardigans and these are only the tip of the iceberg so to speak. You can find other great cardigan designs from some of our favorite sweater designers including, Laurie B., Splendid and Ella Moss. As the weather warms up, some of the lighter weight wraps and cardigans from designers such as Velvet by Graham and Spencer or Sweet Pea will be great pieces to have on hand.

In the end we all have to decide which trends work best for us, but it is always helpful to know what is out there. In fact, even as a shopper who considers myself fashion forward, I must admit that I do sometimes sit back and wait until I see some of these trends lasting beyond one season before I incorporate some of them into my wardrobe. So bottom line, take these as a good assortment of ideas and then utilize them as you feel most comfortable.

You will also see a variety of long length skirts and long ruffled skirts. We’ve seen many of these long almost ankle length skirts with ruffled layers in bright spring colors like purples and corals.
In short, if you want to be front and center with the latest spring fashion trends in 2011, you will want to layer into your wardrobe good belts and add in at least one skinny /narrow belt. Be sure to have at least one pair of cropped leggings and if you feel up to it add in a long ruffled skirt. Have at least one neutral tone wrap or jacket to accent your spring dresses and skirts. Most of all, be sure to make sure that whatever styles you incorporate we suggest finding your own voice in these styles to really help accent and create your own individual style.
Layers are everywhere this season and especially in colder temperatures layers are a great way to help keep you warm while still looking stylish. You can create that layered look in a variety of ways, but there are certainly a few that stand out as our favorites at Vintage Fringe.
You can’t talk about dressing with layers without discussing wraps and cardigans. They truly are such versatile pieces that help to bridge the gap between warm and cold weather practically all year round. You can find wraps in all sorts of fabrics depending on how heavy you want them, but we suggest wearing a good cotton or jersey wrap that you can throw in a bag to have with you as the perfect option on a cold evening. These wraps can also be perfect for traveling if you need something light weight to carry on a plane or in your luggage. Wraps can be found in just about every color so there really is no excuse for not having at least one. Currently you’ll see them with flared or wide open fronts as a popular look. You’ll see wraps in cropped lengths which are great accents for dresses or other outfits. We also love long wraps to pair with leggings and boots which seem to be my go to look for the winter this year.
Another essential piece when dressing with layers are long sleeve shirts. Whether you like long sleeve tops or turtlenecks these are essential pieces if you are looking to layer up. Long sleeve tops are perfect if you are looking to wear them under wraps, cardigans or even as is so popular under other short sleeve tops. Turtlenecks are some of our favorite pieces to wear under certain sweaters and if you’ve seen the long sweater cardigans turtlenecks can be great basics to layer underneath. At Vintage Fringe we have a variety of different styles of turtlenecks from solid colors to turtlenecks that are truly statement pieces, but in any case you shouldn’t overlook these basic long sleeve tops when you are looking to find ways to layer up in colder weather.
Finally another great piece to layer with are light jackets. Our favorite jackets for layering include lightweight fleece or other jersey cotton. Consider the Cropped Double Breasted Jacket by Zooey which is a great lightweight jersey cotton that is light enough to wear in warmer weather and also warm enough for fall weather. We even wear it as a blazer during colder weather giving it added versatility.
Dressing with layers is really so much about function and versatility and giving you options depending on the weather, but despite all of these great reasons for layers you don’t have to sacrifice style. You can easily find a variety of tops, wraps and jackets that will help you create your own individual style with a few great pieces that really help give your wardrobe a variety of options in addition to helping you fit in with the latest trends.
When you are shopping this year you will want to be mindful of the latest new fashion trends for 2011 and be on the lookout for great ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe and individual style. Today we’re going to highlight a new trend in style of tops, trends in lengths and trends in color and patterns.
As for style trends for tops you will see looser fits. Lots of wide, long tops ranging from the retro Flashdance inspired baggy sweatshirt top that you can rock with leggings or jeans or jeggings as they will still be popular. You will see tops that are tunic length and many that are wider in the waist and shoulders giving you a distinctive look from the short fitted tops of seasons past. You will also find peasant blouses back in full steam this year. Frilly lightweight, sheer fabrics with solid colors or patterns with ruffles and/or ties at the waist will be big this upcoming season.
Another trend that you will continue to see this season is the popularity of cropped jackets. This trend is working its way into sweaters with lots of cropped sweaters and cardigans for your more casual attire. Cropped jackets or blazers adorned with epaulets, buttons, zippers and many more accent details will be all the rage this season. You’ll see the magazines showcase these jackets with long tops underneath and often over leggings or skinny jeans. Of course, you will want to work these into your wardrobe as you like to fit your own individual style, but this short cropped length is a big trend this season.
In 2011 you are sure to see lots of great patterns ranging from python prints or floral patterns all the way to more subtle infusions of tie dye. You’ll most definitely want to look for great tops with the patterns that suit your individual style. This season bright colors will be popular. Be on the lookout for coral colors, blues and purples. You will also see lots of clothing utilizing shimmer and shine with the use of fabrics instead of more matte fabrics and colors. Satins, sequins and sheer are our rule of thumb this season. Patterns will range from distinctive animal prints like python to bold floral patterns, lots of elements of tie dye patterns and of course stripes in a host of great fabrics and distinctive style tops.
Of course how you choose to utilize these trends is completely up to you, but we think you’ll find having a piece or two that fit these trends will help spruce up your wardrobe for 2011. Also don’t think that you will have to spend a small fortune on these fashion trends. In keeping with the prior year trends you’ll see these trends implemented in the high end lines as well as in the more economical lines so it won’t simply be a trend you see on the runway. We recommend investing in a few great pieces with these trends that you can wear for years to come.
During colder weather we often find ourselves feeling a lot like Goldilocks as you want something warm, but at the same time you don’t want something too warm so that you have to wear layers of clothing in case you end up too hot and need to start shedding some of those layers. The short sleeve sweater is the perfect solution to this problem and is a great way to incorporate lots of alternative options for warmer weather. To give you an idea of some great ways to incorporate short sleeve sweaters into your wardrobe, here are a few examples of great short sleeve sweaters that will help add that versatility into your cold weather wardrobe and frankly many can even work in warmer weather too.
Cardigans and wraps are ever popular this season and for good reason. They are great layering pieces and have really become main stream as a basic long sleeve top. Many modern cardigans feature long sleeves and now range from heavy sweaters to light weight knits. Consider the Rumba Puff Sleeve Cardigan / Wrap from Laurie B. The Rumba short sleeve sweater is a great example of a short sleeve sweater that we wear year round. It works great over long sleeve tops in the winter and over tanks and short sleeve tops in the spring and summer months. We love the shorter length in the back and the longer flared front. Of course another great touch is the puff sleeves that give this sweater a unique feminine look.
Another great short sleeve cardigan is the Cotton Bamboo Cardigan by Splendid. This cardigan is long and features a more classic, traditional cardigan look. The distinction for this short sleeve sweater is the great navy blue color and the contrasting white stitching design that complements the front and a pattern in the back. This cardigan features front pockets and slightly gathered sleeves for added detail. A great versatile piece again this cardigan can be worn over long sleeves in the winter and over short sleeves in the summer.
We love the distinctive elements on the Cotton Bamboo Cardigan and another example of a short sleeve sweater with similar attention to details and a third distinctive short sleeve sweater style is the Venice Keyhole Back Sweater by Laurie B. Featuring lots of details including the layered keyhole back, the flared short sleeve, and the fitted waist in back giving it an added twist this top looks fairly standard from the front, but as you can see the back is loaded with detail. The fabric is a cashmere blend and also feels very soft. Of course our favorite piece of this sweater is the surprise details in back that really do make this sweater a perfect statement piece and certainly something you won’t find every day.
As you can see from these great examples of unique styles for short sleeve sweaters that you really can find a lot of stylish, versatile options for short sleeve sweaters that can work in your wardrobe practically all year round.
