Double Breasted Cocoon Coat with Bow
When it comes to fashionable colors, one of our favorite vintage colors is green. So when we learned last week that Pantone had announced that the must-have color for 2013 was emerald green we were delighted. This color is a great statement color that can easily be blended into your wardrobe in a variety of different clothing options.
It is that time of year where jackets are imperative and finding a fashionable jacket in emerald green is no problem at Vintage Fringe. One of our favorite designers, new to Vintage Fringe is Tulle which does such a great job of creating vintage style fashions and this season they utilized a lot of emerald green colors in their designs. Whether your favorite is the Double Breasted Cocoon Coat in Deep Emerald which features a 3/4 length and cute gathered sleeves and our favorite an adorable bow in back adding to the adorable vintage style elements. If you need something with a little more of a trench style, then consider the Tie Waist Coat with Epaulettes also in an Emerald Green shade that features a more fitted style. The tie waist is secured in back with wide sewn in belt loops so it won’t move around while you are wearing it and it gives you flexibility to wear it open or unbuttoned without worrying about the loose tie belt. The Epaulettes are just the tip of the iceberg so to speak with the details on this jacket like the pockets at the top of the jacket and on the sides at the bottom and the matching belted detail around the cuffs on the jacket. We have no shortage of green jackets including the previously mentioned Tie Waist Coat with Ruffles and the classic Single Breasted Coat which comes in both Green and Black.
Sui Kimono Top
If you are looking for something green to wear under your jacket, you can find a number of great options of tops and dresses in the gorgeous green color. Check out the Dolman Sleeve Scoopneck top by Sunday in Brooklyn one of our great indie designers. This top utilizes a number of great fashion trends like the dolman sleeves that are so popular right now and also colorblocking with the contrasting green and ivory colors. This top is silk and truly a luxurious statement top. It features an elastic gathered waist giving it the over-sized flowing look around the waist. This top looks great with a pair of skinny jeans or a pencil skirt and boots. Another great green option is the Sui Kimono Top by Ogle which is loaded with great stylish details. The Sui top is a great way to showcase the gorgeous green color and also features great style with the lattice detail down the back of the top and the cute kimono style sleeves with a tie in the middle of the waist. A great top to wear out at night and classy enough to wear to the office as well.
Sammy Long Sleeve Belted Dress
If you want great dress options in green consider the Button Front Sleeveless Dress by Tulle which is a great retro style dress featuring ruffles around the sleeves, a tie waist and buttons down the center of the dress. This dress is a great versatile party dress that is also stylish and comfortable while also being adorable. The Zahara Knot Dress by Velvet in Lilypad features a great comfortable jersey cotton long sleeve dress with a knot detail at the base of the v neckline. This dress also looks great with boots and is a great versatile go to dress. Finally, another great dress that you can pair with leggings and boots as well is the Sammy Long Sleeve Belted Dress also by Velvet. Whether it is a great jacket, dress or top, you will be sure to find lots of ways to work a little emerald into your closet.
This season you are sure to see one of the latest fashion trends – full skirts. The full skirt is a totally feminine way to wear a stylish skirt that is not only stylish, but also extremely comfortable. A welcome addition to fashion trends, the comfortable skirt that is also flattering and feminine is something so popular that it is difficult to find such skirts in stock. Consider a few examples of this great fashion trend that have quickly become some of our favorite must have skirts this season.
First, consider the Lija Skirt. This skirt by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer is truly a perfect blend of a classic style with contemporary details like the raw edge and the high waist. The skirt of course flares which makes it a full skirt that also will make you feel girly and feminine on while also making it very comfortable and flattering. This is a great “go to” skirt that can be worn out running errands on a weekend or with the right top and accessories dressed up and worn to a dressy occasion too. Available in basic black, this skirt is a must have summer essential. It is also a jersey cotton so it is comfortable and casual enough to literally go from day to night and is also machine washable to boot.
Similarly, the Fanya Skirt which is also by Velvet is another example of a great full skirt. This skirt, however, is more than just a great classic flared skirt, because it also features a diagonal stripe pattern and an asymmetric hem and a diagonal line across the waist for accent. The pattern shifts at this seam as well giving it a natural break and added distinction. In fact, the Fanya skirt is actually a great modern interpretation of the classic full skirt. This skirt is made from a cotton tencel blend so it is the ultimate soft, comfortable fabric and easy to wear again for casual and dressy occasions depending on what you wear it with and how you accessorize it. I love the raw edges again at the hem and the stripe pattern that really does make this a distinctive skirt. Best of all it is available in Night a navy/black stripe contrast, Highland a taupe/brown stripe and Green House a contrasting light green/dark green stripe pattern.
As you can see, both of these skirts are great examples of modern updates to a classic full skirt style that is also extremely wearable and by default also extremely comfortable with their wearable, comfortable fabrics and the natural fit of the full skirt style. Obviously the Lija skirt has a more classic approach, but the asymmetrical line and the complementary stripe pattern which makes this skirt a great distinctive full skirt alternative. Best of all both of these skirts are extremely versatile and can be worn to most casual and even certain dressy occasions with a number of different style of tops and accessories.
For many, the 70s were a fashion trend that people either love or hate. One of the best things about modern trends is that the finding elements of decades past or vintage style elements in modern fashion is really much easier than you might think and in many cases bring retro styles back in improved ways that work in current styles. When I think of 70s vintage fashion I think of short skirts, bold colors including lots of color blocking all with a certain edge of modernity or bohemian style. Consider a few of these great pieces as examples of how modern designers and styles incorporate vintage trends into wearable modern dresses, tops and sweaters.
As an example of modern designer pieces that are part of our current style, but still incorporate vintage style elements. Designer Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati features the Mod Retro Tunic which I think is a great example of new 70s vintage fashion. This top screams vintage style. Made by Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati, a designer that loves to work with patterns, this print is totally retro with bold colors and patterns. In addition, the style of this tunic looks like it just walked out of the 70s and yet today would look so hot with tall boots to really bring a vintage style to the modern day. The Retro Boatneck Dress in the same pattern is a more conservative style than the Retro Tunic, but is another great vintage style piece.
The Ella Moss Baja Tie Waist Sweater is another great example of 70s vintage style fashion. This bohemian inspired piece pays homage to modern, yet retro styles and includes a white knit with a multi color stripe around the hem. The loose tie waist can be styled however your individual style prefers. True to retro style this top also features a Henley neckline or split v neckline. The Baja Tie Waist Sweater is a great piece with a subtle look compared to the bold colors of the Mod Retro Tunic.
Another retro piece by designer Ella Moss is the Ella Moss Miley Striped Cardigan featuring bold, but colors. This adorable cropped length cardigan features knit around the shoulders in three stripes with different colors contrasted by either a sold blue or candy apple red contrasting solid knit. The bold colors and stripes invoke all sorts of retro styles and pieces and make this a great statement piece cardigan.
Each of these pieces is an excellent example of utilizing vintage styles in modern fashions and in distinctive ways and pieces. As you can see vintage elements can be found in a variety of pieces from dresses or tunics to sweaters and in a variety of different styles and different designers. I love the fact that each of these pieces has that retro flair, but yet still blends in perfectly in modern styles. Even if these pieces aren’t for you, hopefully they will give you inspiration to find additional vintage style pieces that do suit your own individual style.
With the resurgence of scarves as a fashion trend that is here to stay for a while means that we all need to know how to wear them. Of course we all know that you can wear them just loose around your neck and open in front, you can wear them looped around the neck, and you can wear them with a loose knot in front and truly that is just a few of the possible options of how to wear them. In addition, we will also discuss some of the dos and don’ts with wearing scarves.
Personally my favorite style to wear a scarf is a loose loop around the neck. With a long scarf you fold the scarf in half. Holding the scarf at both ends, then you pull the loose ends through the folded end to give you a comfortable, loose loop around the neck. This style gives you the elegant long scarf look and still keeps the scarf in place. I prefer this because it keeps everything in place rather than having to constantly readjust it all day. Of course, you have to wear it the way that suits your preferences, but you really do have a variety of options and it is hard to go wrong. Unlike the scarf trend in the 80s, you will want long scarves rather than the then popular short scarf. Also, you won’t need a book to teach you different folds to wear or style your scarf. The stylish look this time around is long and loose which trust me is a blessing.
As for dos and don’ts, you will want to follow a few simple guidelines in shopping for and looking for good scarf attire. First, you will want to find whatever style of scarf suits your fancy. Perhaps it is a striped pattern, a frilly style or even a simple solid color. Whatever your preference, you really can’t go wrong. Again, keep in mind that the goal is length. You want to find a scarf that is long enough to wrap and then consider your own closet to decide what color or style would work best for you. We recommend starting with a couple of good basic colors. Normally we suggest basic blacks as the best starting point, but in this case since you are working with an accessory you will want to add in a complement or accent color. Pastels are in this season. We even love the white scarf although it does make it more challenging to keep clean.
As for what to wear them with, our rule of thumb is think of the basic rules of wearing a necklace. This means you probably wouldn’t wear it over a turtleneck and you probably would wear it with a scoop neck, v neck, button-up top or crew neckline. Bottom line, this scarf trend is something you wear practically year round and clearly not just with a winter coat. Many of the don’ts are basic common sense. You don’t wear a striped scarf with a striped shirt. We don’t think a scarf really fits with hoodies and again you just need to consider the necklace rule and if there is already a lot going on around your neckline, then you will want to avoid adding to it. Lastly one question we often hear is do you wear a scarf in the summer? Our advice is generally no, but that is not to say that some people have incorporated that into their own style and like it and it works, but as a general rule we would say wear your scarves in spring, summer, and winter, but let your scarf take a break in summer.
Let us know what you think? Are scarves an ok trend for summer?
Jackets are always evolving along with fashion trends every season. Of course this season is no different, but you will definitely want to be mindful of some of the latest jacket trends when you are out shopping for a new jacket. There are several new trends you should be aware of when considering your next jacket purchase including length, styles and fabrics.
By far the biggest fashion trend with respect to jackets this season is the length. You will find jackets this season are hot in really two extreme lengths. Short or cropped length is definitely a big trend this season. You will find people wearing cropped jackets with longer length tops. The cropped length jacket is really such a great new jacket look that you will want to have at least one to mix up the looks with your jacket wardrobe. Alternatively you will also find stylish jackets in long lengths as well. Trench coats are seeing a surge this season as well and you will find a variety of stylish trench coats that are knee length this season. Having a lightweight jacket like a trench coat will be the perfect piece to add a little fresh fashion trend into your closet.
You will also see jackets in a variety of styles but with a few standout trends. The latest trends include a lot of the military style embellished cropped jackets . Many trends include vintage inspired elements such as cropped flared wrap jackets that you would have seen in furs or in the movies. Both of these great jacket trends pair so well with boots and leggings or even just your everyday jeans or cargo pants. You will also see lots of off center accents such as zippers or buttons . Of course we can’t forget to mention accents like belts that are also part of the latest jacket trends. Embellishments and accents on jackets this season are practically a trend unto themselves.
Another trend this season is jackets that mix up the textures with fabrics. You’ll see the lots of retro or vintage elements in the fabrics lots of patterns and tweed. You will also see shimmer and ruffles mixed into a variety of jacket styles. Really the trend is variety of texture and you can find it in a variety of patterns and styles. Fabrics will be more shimmer and sparkle than matte and in a combination of bold colors and earth tones are making a comeback this season.
Our goal is always to try and create our own individual style so depending on your preferences you may want to buck the trends altogether, but it is always helpful to know what the latest trends are so that you can choose whether you want to incorporate them into your own personal wardrobe. It is always good to have at least one jacket that is trendy enough to help spruce up your wardrobe and with the current trends for jackets. Personally I love my cropped bomber jacket and my trench coat is it is hard to choose just one, but in any case we hope you’ll find that perfect style jacket just for you!
Fashion Week 2009 wouldn’t be Fashion Week if we weren’t able to glean fabulous fashion trends for the upcoming season from the typical creative, bold pieces that debut at Fashion Week! In this current economic market where all the news about doom and gloom keeps us shoppers far more conscientious about our spending, we thought we would touch on a few of the trends that can be implemented in more economic fashions for those of us who can only dream about buying those couture fashions at the moment.
Fashion Trend # 1 – We loved the use of bold colors. We are seeing lots of purple, the smokey shade we have previously mentioned in our blog posts, but also bold shades of purple with blue hues, so it isn’t the same Joker color purple that seems so circa 1980 now.
Splendid Clothing Blurple 2009 Fashion Trend Color
One of our favorite tops in this blue/purple is the Modal Jersey with Silk Cotton Voile SS Scoop Neck with Buttons by Splendid. We love this Splendid Tee because it is full of feminine details with the gathered and puffed sleeve, the buttons in the center of the scoop neck and of course the bold “Blurple” color. We also saw other colors like yellow, orange, green, brown and those metallic shades that are so popular right now.
Splendid Clothing Rayon Slub Boatneck Top Color Trends
Don’t throw out your grey clothing just yet either. Grey and that smokey shade of grey will still be big this fall. We love the different shades of grey ranging from darker charcoal shades such as Splendid’s “Coal” version of the Rayon Slub Boatneck which we also carry in “Russet” a bold shade of Orange.
So the key takeaway for those of us who are looking for budget conscious clothing these days: adding a few key pieces in bold colors is a great way to keep your wardrobe hip and trendy while still watching your check book. As illustrations, both of these tops by Splendid are economical ways to still bring a bold bit of color to give your current wardrobe an upgrade with a fashionable piece that won’t break the bank.
Ella Moss Clothing
Ella Moss Clothing is naturally known as a trendy, fashionable line for women, but at Vintage Fringe we also love how much of their line is impacted by vintage style. For example, take this picture of Katherine Hepburn circa the 1940s. Notice the puffy sleeves and the cinched center with the v neck. All of these details are rampant in today’s modern fashions and many of them are found in recent designs from Ella Moss.
Katherine Hepburn Vintage Style
Check out the Ella Moss Puff Sleeve V Neck top; perhaps the best illustration of this Hepburn vintage style in modern application. We love the cinched v neck, the puff sleeve and another application of another fashion trend as we mentioned in prior posts this awesome Smokey Purple Color.
This top is available at Vintage Fringe in this color, Ella Moss calls it Soot. We love the look of this top and love the feminine touches as well as the homage to vintage style. More importantly, we want to know what you think about this top and specifically these vintage style trends.
Velvet brand clothing is always en vogue. One fashion trend that we have loved this season are the long tunic length tops. As examples, we love Velvet by Graham and Spencer’s Darvey Tunic length buttonup top and we love the Kelisha long tank top as it is a perfect complement for these tunic length tops that look silly with your standard length tank underneath.
Velvet Brand Clothing Darvey
Velvet’s Darvey top features a raw edge at the waist giving it a more casual feel. We love the buttons that give you the option of wearing them mostly buttoned or mostly unbuttoned. The length of these tops is perfectly complemented by cute leggings or boots, but if that isn’t your style can be easily worn with your favorite pair of jeans. The length on both the Darvey and Kelisha tops traditionally fits several inches below the waist. We currently have the Darvey top available in Lilypad (Green), Mole (Brown), Black and White.
Velvet Brand Clothing Kelisha
The Kelisha tank features the traditional scoop neck in both front and back and as mentioned is tunic length. If you’re like us, you know how difficult it can be to find a tunic length tank top. We have the Kelisha tank in both Black and White. Both the Darvey and the Kelisha tank are part of Velvet by Graham and Spencer’s Baby Jersey collection and accordingly are machine washable.
While this fashion trend unfortunately isn’t for all body types, we at Vintage Fringe think if your body type fits the profile, then by all means wear it. We love not having to worry about shorter shirts riding up all the time or tucking tops in. We love the legging look (part of this trend) and love wearing tops like these with boots. At Vintage Fringe, we are fans of this tunic length top trend, but we love to hear from you. What do you think?
Zooey by Alice Heller has done it again! She has designed a fabulous top that we think will be a must have for all fashionistas this holiday season. We’re referring to the black satin trim cardigan top that is so versatile.
Zooey by Alice Heller
It can easily work as a cardigan over your dress to the holiday party, yet still looks amazing when worn with jeans. With the contrasting satin trim around the collar, the body of the top, and the tie, this top has that dressy, sophisticated look while also being super soft and made from a supima cotton modal blend making it so comfortable. What we love even more about this awesome fabric is that it is also machine washable. We love the 3/4 length sleeves that also add to the versatility as it doesn’t have to be worn only in the winter. Zooey’s creative use of contrasting fabrics never neglects the basics.
Zooey by Alice Heller
Signature tops such as their wide v neck available in every sleeve length makes Zooey by Alice Heller’s tops a fashion trend for a variety of tops including those everyday basic tops that even fashionistas can’t live without.
