Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer Ruz Poncho

Velvet by Graham and Spencer is one of our favorite designers at Vintage Fringe.  Today we wanted to spotlight a few of our favorite pieces in their latest collections and highlight some of the reasons why we are such big fans.

At its core, Velvet’s line centers around staple jersey cottons and comfortable casual styles; however, they have also expanded their collections to include elements of faux fur, lace, vibrant patterns, cashmere, and so much more.  Consider a few of our latest favorite pieces as examples of their fabulous wearable fashions.

Consider the Ruz Faux Fur Poncho/Cape.  This jacket truly typifies a modern approach that incorporates a gorgeous vintage style.  The Ruz poncho really reminds us of something you would see on any of the ladies in Mad Men.  It also feels as luxurious as it looks and in a sleek black color makes for a true statement piece.  True to the poncho style, the Ruz jacket is a pullover jacket and flares toward the waist.  This piece is a true paradox as it is bold and yet classic simultaneously.  Elegant ponchos are a big fashion trend this season and a great way to add a new distinctive feminine piece into your wardrobe.

Next the Odet Asymmetrical Hem Skirt features another fashion trend you will see this season with the asymmetrical hemline.  The skirt flares out at the knee with the cascading hemline and off-center seam that gives this skirt added depth and texture.  The Odet skirt also features a gathered waistline that is fitted, but not tight.  The sister to the Odet skirt, the Pia Long Asymmetrical Hem skirt features the same style, but with a longer length. Both skirts are comfortable, sophisticated and feminine which makes them great staples for your wardrobe his season. These skirts are also great options for dressy events as well as casual and I love pairing them with a top like the Giann Cowlneck top also by Velvet.

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Velvet Kayin Scoopneck Dress

Finally the Kayin Scoop Neck Dress is another great example of Velvet’s expanded collections.  This dress, like the Odet Skirt, features a rayon blend which feels super soft and adds to the comfortable feel.  The Kayin skirt features a loose gathered waistband and a wide short sleeve.  This dress looks stunning with boots and can also be paired with a belt.  It is available at Vintage Fringe in Charcoal and Navy, and is a great option for your fall wardrobe.

As you can see, Velvet by Graham and Spencer’s latest collection features a variety of distinctive clothing options incorporating the latest in fashion trends in a stylish and wearable way.  These few pieces are just a few great examples of the depth of style and fashion that Velvet’s lines have to offer.  Best of all, all of their clothing is Made in the USA, in Los Angeles in fact which in the current economy is a great advantage.

Jeweled Cardigan

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Let’s face it, we’ve seen a thousand cardigans and they are all basically the same thing.  We probably have at least five cardigans in our closets in a variety of different colors or fabrics.  If you want to individualize your cardigans your options are generally to find another color or pattern to mix it up.  Of course you can always accessorize them, but finding that perfect accessory just for a cardigan can be a lot of work and hassle.   We love finding cardigans that are even more distinctive than that with added accents such as jeweled cardigans or cardigans that don’t look like the run of the mill solid color cardigans you see at big box retailers.  Any variations can be great alternatives to the basic solid cotton cardigan.

One of our favorite pieces is a jeweled cardigan by an up in coming designer, Joy Joy Clothing.  The Heart Button Cardigan features tons of detail which we love!  First it has heart shaped buttons with bows on them.  Then there are the puckered ¾ length sleeves which look so girly and feminine.  Finally, last but certainly not least the heart shaped accent in place of a pocket on the lapel, featuring a variety of different pattern covered buttons literally sewn on in a heart shape. You don’t often find something this perfect and this piece is sure to become one of your favorites too.

When you are shopping for distinctive styles of cardigans like a jeweled cardigan, you will also find cardigans in a variety of fabrics which can make all the difference in terms of how and where you wear each cardigan. For example, the Satin Trim Cropped Cardigan features satin trim with a satin tie around the neckline.  This is a detail or trim that you don’t see everyday on the basic cardigans.  We love finding these gem cardigans that are full of detail and distinction.  These pieces are really investments in your closet and a great way to add vibrant, unique pieces to your closet.  Alternatively, the Pleated Paisley Front Ruffle Cardigan features a bold paisley pattern with a cascading ruffle down the front.  This is a great elegant cardigan that would be perfect paired with a black tank and skirt and is a great addition for summer.

We love the cardigan because of its versatility and utility in our closets.  A great piece to dress up a simple tank top and something that can be worn to work and casually too.  Finding a way to elevate a wardrobe essential is always something so satisfying and really is an investment in your wardrobe.  Whatever details suit your personal preferences, you can find a number of great cardigans that do amp it up and really add a lot to that basic cardigan and they don’t have to break the budget.  You always need a few basic cardigans too, but we think that every closet needs a few great statement cardigans that can help transform that simple black dress or tank into something even better.

Fashion Trend: Victorian Style Embellishments (V Neck Tie Waist Tunic)

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

At Vintage Fringe, we love details and embellishments on clothing.  It gives meaning to the Fringe part of our name.  In fact, we believe that details are really what can make or break a piece and help set it apart to really put it in a class of its own as a statement piece.  Finding a piece with those little added details are the things that our buyers at Vintage Fringe hunt for.

In an effort to bring this passion for details to the modern trends, consider one of the latest fashion trends including Victorian Style embellishments.  As you know, vintage style pieces or even vintage style elements have made a resurgence in modern styles. Victorian style embellishments are one such vintage style making a comeback as part of the latest fashion trends.  As a few examples of different ways that Victorian style embellishments are well played in some of the latest fashions.

First take a look at the V Neck Tie Waist Tunic by designer Collective Concepts.   The perfect blend of old and new with the tunic style length and the tie at the waist combined with the embellishments around the neckline.  The embellishments are in ivory a great contrast color for the light grey tunic.  Of course the rayon fabric feels just as luxurious on as it looks with the embellishments.  This piece is a great top to wear over leggings or jeans or even that perfect skirt in the warmer weather.

You don’t have to look very far with designer AlixK’s collection to find pieces that are loaded with elegant Victorian style embellishments.  Just about every piece that we feature at Vintage Fringe includes hand sewn embroidery in beautiful patterns and in frequently in great contrasting colors.   Take a look at the Discharge Long Sleeve Turtleneck with a regal Victorian style pattern for the embroidery around the neckline.  We love the ruching around the turtleneck too giving it an added feminine detail. Alternatively the Boudoir top features a sophisticated embroidery detail on the back of the v neck top.  We love the contrasting colors of grey on black or berry red on a brown clay color fabric.  We would be remiss if we didn’t mention AlixK’s fabulous fabric.  It is a silk cotton blend which gives it an amazing softness while it is also easy to wear and machine washable.  It is truly a perfect fabric for everyday.

As you can see, these are just a few great pieces that illustrate modern ways that Victorian Style Embellishments have made their way into current fashions.   Of course this is only one of many similar fashion trends that have made their way into modern fashions and certainly only a couple of examples of how Victorian elements can be successfully used to bridge the old with the new.  Best of all, this trend really can be on casual pieces and dressier pieces.  This versatility is a great asset to help maximize the different ways you can wear this fashion trend.

What to Wear with This Season’s Denim

Friday, March 11th, 2011

When you’re trying to determine what to wear with denim this season it can be a difficult task to keep up with the current fashion trends.  To help make it easier to figure out what to pair with your clothing today we’re going to include some great rules of thumb to help make sure you look stylish.  At the outset, denim is one of those pieces that literally goes with just about anything.  Denim has become the mainstay for most casual clothing and depending on the occasion is becoming more and more prevalent at events where denim used to be strictly off limits.  We do still think that like my mother taught me there still some places where as much as we would love to wear denim, it shouldn’t go to the theatre or as a general rule of thumb where people are performing and we definitely love the opportunity to dress up as the occasion permits.  With that in mind, you should look at denim pieces as true investment pieces in your clothing wardrobe and make sure that you do have at least one pair of up to date denim in your closet.  You can really wear almost anything with denim and we suggest that you include a few basic rules of thumb when you put together your tops with your denim.

First one of the big themes with denim this season is the darker wash.  The deep blue colors can even be so dark to look navy blue at a minimum and almost black.  In fact, you do even see some of the faded black or grey colored denim out there as well.  With these dark colors, you will want to find great tops in colors that are great contrast.  Consider deep greens or coral colors that are very popular this season.  You will also see lots of lighter blues and purple or plum colors that are great contrasts with deep blue colors for denim.

Our next tip is for longer length tops.  One big trend in denim is skinny jeans.  The tapered leg look has even transcended into “jeggings” or jean leggings.  This skinny jeans look opens the door for tops that are tunic length which are a great complement to the slimmer look around the ankle.  Even if you don’t want to invest in a pair of jeggings, tunic tops can also work with other denim styles depending on what shoes or boots you pair them with.  Tunic tops are great versatile pieces that can work with some skirts and leggings in addition to jeans or jeggings or even denim capris.   You’ll even find longer length sweaters again this season and they look great with sliming denim and boots.

In short, you really can’t go wrong with denim, but if you are looking to stay ahead of the curve we think that you’ll find the contrasting colors and tunic length tops as great complements to the latest denim trends.  Ultimately, as with all trends, you want to make sure that whatever you wear it fits with your own personal style and be sure to stay true to that no matter what the fashion trends of the day dictate.

Winter White Fashion

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

If you’re looking for ways to have winter white fashion looks this season consider a few great pieces in a variety of shades of white and ivory to help create that beautiful winter white look.  Of course you will want to make sure and have some great accessories to help give the right amount of contrast to your look.

As a great example of ways to add contrasting colors, consider the Moonlight Cap Sweater by designer Laurie b.  This fashion forward sweater is available in white and during winter we love to wear it over long sleeve scoop necks in black or any color to add a little edge to the look.  Our favorite top to wear under this sweater is the Long Sleeve Scoop Neck by Splendid.  It is a great fabric and has a sheer look to it.  Available in a variety of colors including white that long sleeve scoop neck is the perfect complement for the Moonlight Cap Sweater. This sweater is a great way to layer in additional winter white fashion.

The Audrey wrap, also by designer Laurie b. features a luxurious knit in Ivory with a subtle contrasting tie at the waist in tan to give it just a hint of color.  With a beautiful fabric and classic feminine design, this wrap is a great winter sweater.

A lighter weight piece that is a great complement for your winter white fashion wardrobe is the Very Light Jersey Draped Cardigan by Splendid.  Available in a variety of clothing including white, this light weight cardigan has a flowing look and long length which capitalizes on two great fashion trends this season – the long length and the sheer lightweight fabric.  You’ll see a variety of similar light weight fabrics such as burnout again this season.

For a different look, consider the Nona ¾ length sleeve ruffle top by Velvet.  This winter white top features a ruffle accenting the v neckline and is slightly gathered in back.  We love the classic look of this top with the feminine touches and best of all the comfortable, baby jersey cotton fabric which is so wearable and comfortable.  It is long enough to wear with a wide belt if you are looking for longer length tops.

If you’re looking for great winter white accessories, consider one of our favorite necklaces featuring large white turquoise beads with specks of sand color on them.  For contrast, the designer utilized small shimmering gold colored beads in between the large turquoise beads.  All of this is set off by a copper chain for additional color.

There is truly no shortage of options for different ways to wear winter white fashion this season.  You’ll find a variety of ways to create great individual style while focusing your wardrobe on winter white.  As you create your own individual style winter white fashion, don’t forget that you may want just a pop of color and great jewelry is a great way to add a little pop or sparkle to help break up a monotone looking outfit.

Laurie B. Sweaters

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Laurie B. sweaters are some of our favorite sweaters and this is the perfect time of year to find amazing deals on great sweaters.  Laurie B. is perhaps one of the most distinctive of all of the designers available at Vintage Fringe.  The American knitwear line: Laurie B. is the creation of Laurie Brazeau.  Laurie was born in Mexico, raised in the United States and traveled the world searching for work and inspiration.  After working for years in Paris as a private label designer she returned home and launched her own knit line Laurie B. working from her own home in Oakland, California.  While Laurie has no formal design school training she has managed to build her brand and her style into a recognizable icon for knitwear internationally.  She credits her international travels, vintage shopping skills, and her color outside the lines mentality as her inspiration behind her one of a kind designer style.  Here are a few examples of great outside the lines sweaters that will help you create your own distinctive style:

Laurie B. Milan Sweater – This great short wrap cardigan features a tie that can go in front or in back depending on how you like to wear it.  It also features a lightly gathered seam at the empire waist line giving it added elements of detail.  In addition, the wide ¾ length sleeve something you don’t see on every wrap these days.  You’ll love the rich Truffle brown color and the ivory Parmesan color too.  This sweater is certainly versatile and works as a great substitute for a blazer at work or to throw over your tank top on a cool night out.

Laurie B. Moonlight Cap Wrap Sweater – You’ll love this distinctive sweater and its fashion forward look.  Complete with a flowing look of the wide v neck with the tie around the waist giving it a contemporary, fitted look.  This sweater is available in a variety of colors and is perfect to go over a long sleeve top in just about any color.  You’ll love the slight shimmer on the knit and the distinctive, modern look.   It is a perfect wrap to layer and looks stunning with boots or leggings.

Laurie B. Gable Stripe Cardigan – Featuring a dramatic contrasting zipper that is front and center in this distinctive cardigan, the Gable Stripe grey and black pattern looks so classy and elegant.  Laurie B. still manages to weave in fashion forward elements with the dolman flared sleeve on this sweater, a scoop neckline and the contrasting black trim around the neckline and cuffs and hem.   You also would not believe how luxuriously soft the knit on this sweater feels.  It is made from a viscose, nylon blend and it feels super soft and very comfortable.  One of our favorite looks is wearing this over a long sleeve black top with a black skirt and boots in the winter.

Laurie B.’s sweaters are always excellent quality and as you can see from the few pieces mentioned in this post that so many of her designs are not your run of the mill boxy sweater that you find at so many stores.  Each Laurie B. sweater features great unique design elements and will always be a statement piece in your wardrobe.

Celebrity Fashion at the AMA’s

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Celebrity fashion was in full force at the American Music Awards and with all of our holiday parties coming up check out these looks to gain some inspiration for your own events. Check out Mandy Moore’s fabulous sparkled, long sleeve mini. I love a long sleeve dress, so chic and the one is the perfect combination of colors to combat the little black dress blues.

Fergie of course was a bit over the top, but what we can learn is that a little feather goes a long way. I also am in love with the cobalt blue and black color combination.

Oh Whitney Port, always just the perfect amount of trendy and chic. I love the ombre, draped fabric and of course just about everything looks better belted. I think an ombre cardigan belted over a sparkle tank and skinny pants would be a great interpretation of this look for holiday events.

Shockingly, Katy Perry was a little more covered up, the knee length she choose is super flattering on all women. I also loved the texture of her dress. The neutral color with a little sparkle and texture is ultra feminine, perfect for pairing with a leather bomber in my opinion.

So what is your favorite celebrity look? I for one want to add some sparkle and color to my holiday looks. Have a happy turkey day:)

Fabulous Fall Jackets

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

November is almost here and with it comes even colder weather and the need for warm and chic fashion. I love jackets because they keep us warm and are so easy to button up and look put together instantly. A great jacket with a funky vibe is the Bomber Jacket by Zooey Clothing. It is so cute with the exaggerated collar, front pockets, and short hem. This would be so cute with jeans as shown, or with a pencil skirt and sparkly top for a night out.
