As the weather warms up we are thrilled to be wearing skirts as often as possible. One of this season’s biggest skirt trends are peasant skirts. While the name doesn’t really create an appealing image, it really is a beautiful skirt and best of all something that is ultra comfortable and fun to wear.
The peasant skirt features a series of connected layers that give a subtle ruffled look and of course a great touch of feminine details. They can come in a variety of different lengths depending on your preferences, but they are almost always longer skirts that fall well below the knee. They can also be as long as ankle length. The longer length makes them a good multi-purpose skirt. The peasant skirt works well as a casual skirt that you can wear with flip flops or sandals or dress it up with heels or boots for dressier occasions.
You can also find peasant skirts in actual tiered fabric layers giving the skirt a heavier, but bold look. These are great statement skirts. Personally, my favorite style of the peasant skirt is the Hilton skirt by one of our favorite designers Velvet by Graham and Spencer. This skirt is long, but not ankle length. It hits about half way between the knee and the ankle. It also features a folded waist band giving you added versatility if you want the length to be a little longer. Currently available in two great colors black (you can never have enough black skirts!) or Rootbeer, a smokey brown color. I love this skirt because I don’t really like the ankle length skirts and depending on your personal body type you want to be careful that you don’t wear skirts that are too long because they can make you look shorter and draw added attention to your feet.
Best of all the peasant skirt really does give you a great feminine skirt that isn’t your basic pencil or A line skirt, but it is super comfortable and is really a great all around wear anywhere skirt. In the current economy where we all are trying to maximize our dollar, this is the perfect versatile piece. I love the ability to wear this on weekends running errands in my flip flops and then the next day wear it to church or a dressy party. Really you can dress it up and change the sophistication level of this skirt by simply changing your shoes and top.
In short, the peasant skirt is a great way to really add a versatile, trendy and stylish skirt to your closet. It really is a must have for summer. It is also a great way to help you accentuate your favorite accessories year round whether they be sandals, boots, a great top, or even jewelry. You can’t go wrong with a good peasant skirt and be sure to consider your individual body type when picking the length for the skirt. If you are super tall, the longer length peasant skirt may be perfect for you, but if you are shorter or feeling a little heavy around the waistline, the shorter length peasant skirt might be best.
The tiered skirt can take a variety of forms. Whether it is the literally tiered layered skirt featuring multiple layers of fabric or the latest trend with the peasant skirts to have them look layered when they are really one fabric gathered to create a layered look. The peasant skirt has recently gained in popularity and is a wonderful casual option for a spring/summer skirt. Peasant skirts can really take a variety of lengths ranging from roughly knee length to ankle length as the maxi dress length has recently increased in popularity.
If you like the maxi skirt length, you will see a host of skirts with long length in either the peasant skirt look or in actually layered fabrics. Personally, I prefer the peasant skirt look as it is not as heavy and is easier to wear. The peasant skirt is the perfect casual skirt that works well for weekends or casual events. You can easily wear these skirts with flip flops. The peasant skirt is naturally very comfortable and a great all around occasion skirt.
The tiered skirt featuring layers of fabric can come in many styles including multiple fabric patterns. I’ve seen this done with a bohemian style look and I must admit, it is not my style as it seems to overdo the pattern. The layered skirt is, however, something that I could easily see a Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City wearing and I think she did wear similar style skirts in various episodes of the show. It is a bold and often dramatic statement and can range from casual to very dressy depending on the fabric, length and style.
Of course with these skirts there are a few rules of thumb when pairing them with tops. As a rule of thumb generally it is never a good idea to tuck any shirts in with these flared bohemian style skirts. Of course there may be an exception, but by and large it is not a good idea. We like pairing these skirts with looser fitting tops such as the Zooey ¾ length sleeve V Neck top or the Zooey Ruffle Bib Top. These tops are looser fits and have subtle details that balance out the flared skirt. You would also want to stay clear of wearing tops that are too long as with the long length of the skirts long tops do not look flattering.
Whatever style of skirt and top suits your individual style, having at least one tiered skirt is a great addition to your closet. If you are looking for just one such type of skirt then I would suggest that you go with a peasant style tiered skirt. I love the Hilton skirt by Velvet by Graham and Spencer as a good middle of the road skirt that has a good length and just enough detail to be comfortable and stylish. These skirts are a perfect casual summer go to skirt for so many occasions and really do balance the wearability with feminine style.
As the weather gets warmer it is time to make sure that you have a few great staple skirts in your closet. Since vintage style elements have become so popular in fashion this season high waisted skirts are making a comeback. Typical high waisted skirts are simple pencil skirts which is a great look. However, this season high waisted skirts can be found in a variety of different skirt styles from pencil skirts to A line skirts or even peasant skirts. Each skirt has a different look and function so whatever style fits best with your wardrobe consider the high waisted skirt as a way to spice up basic pieces with a vintage twist.
First consider the Lija Skirt by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer. This skirt features an elastic waist that depending on your body type hits at or just above your natural waist. In black, a classic color that works with just about everything, this skirt is also jersey cotton which makes it the ultimate casual summer skirt. We love the look of the flared A Line on this skirt and the raw edge on the hem as added distinctive elements.
Probably the most popular high waisted skirt style is the straight pencil skirt. Of course a great pencil skirt is really a staple for your summer wardrobe. They are perfect to wear to the office and in the right fabrics are great all around casual skirts too. Personally, my favorite summer skirt are cotton pencil skirts with a touch of lycra to give it just the right amount of cling. The Sintia Pencil Skirt also by Velvet by Graham and Spencer is a great pencil skirt that also falls above the natural waist. This skirt looks great dressed up and works with flip flops too. This skirt is available at Vintage Fringe in black or grey.
With a completely different look, the peasant skirt can also be a good high waisted alternative. Frequently many peasant skirts tend to fall at the hips or ride lower at the waist, but the Hilton skirt by Velvet by Graham and Spencer features a waist line that can be worn folded over for a lower waist line look or unfolded to create that high waisted look. The ultimate comfort skirt, peasant skirts are huge this season. This skirt is available at Vintage Fringe in black and Rootbeer. I am in love with the Rootbeer smokey brown color for the Hilton skirt!
As you can see, high waisted skirts are far more than simple pencil skirts and can be worked into your closet in a variety of ways. High waisted skirts don’t have to be one of those unattainable fashion trends, as you can find great ways to layer them into your summer wardrobe and even branch into different more casual looks than you would typically think of for high waisted skirts. We love being able to find them in great variations of basic colors that are easy to blend into your wardrobe and give you lots of options for pairing with your favorite tops or tanks.
