Fashion Trend: Victorian Style Embellishments (V Neck Tie Waist Tunic)

At Vintage Fringe, we love details and embellishments on clothing.  It gives meaning to the Fringe part of our name.  In fact, we believe that details are really what can make or break a piece and help set it apart to really put it in a class of its own as a statement piece.  Finding a piece with those little added details are the things that our buyers at Vintage Fringe hunt for.

In an effort to bring this passion for details to the modern trends, consider one of the latest fashion trends including Victorian Style embellishments.  As you know, vintage style pieces or even vintage style elements have made a resurgence in modern styles. Victorian style embellishments are one such vintage style making a comeback as part of the latest fashion trends.  As a few examples of different ways that Victorian style embellishments are well played in some of the latest fashions.

First take a look at the V Neck Tie Waist Tunic by designer Collective Concepts.   The perfect blend of old and new with the tunic style length and the tie at the waist combined with the embellishments around the neckline.  The embellishments are in ivory a great contrast color for the light grey tunic.  Of course the rayon fabric feels just as luxurious on as it looks with the embellishments.  This piece is a great top to wear over leggings or jeans or even that perfect skirt in the warmer weather.

You don’t have to look very far with designer AlixK’s collection to find pieces that are loaded with elegant Victorian style embellishments.  Just about every piece that we feature at Vintage Fringe includes hand sewn embroidery in beautiful patterns and in frequently in great contrasting colors.   Take a look at the Discharge Long Sleeve Turtleneck with a regal Victorian style pattern for the embroidery around the neckline.  We love the ruching around the turtleneck too giving it an added feminine detail. Alternatively the Boudoir top features a sophisticated embroidery detail on the back of the v neck top.  We love the contrasting colors of grey on black or berry red on a brown clay color fabric.  We would be remiss if we didn’t mention AlixK’s fabulous fabric.  It is a silk cotton blend which gives it an amazing softness while it is also easy to wear and machine washable.  It is truly a perfect fabric for everyday.

As you can see, these are just a few great pieces that illustrate modern ways that Victorian Style Embellishments have made their way into current fashions.   Of course this is only one of many similar fashion trends that have made their way into modern fashions and certainly only a couple of examples of how Victorian elements can be successfully used to bridge the old with the new.  Best of all, this trend really can be on casual pieces and dressier pieces.  This versatility is a great asset to help maximize the different ways you can wear this fashion trend.

Vintage Peasant Tops

Peasant tops are a big trend this season and we love the fact that they really do represent a great way to include vintage touches into your closet.  Vintage style peasant tops can include the vintage style elements with the patterns or even vintage elements like smocking or ruffles that have been making a comeback in different style tops.  To begin, peasant tops typically are made from cotton shirting fabrics such as cotton voile and often feature a loose fluid fit and are frequently accented with anything including embroidery, ruffles, ties, or even smocking or ruching.

You will want to find whatever style of peasant tops that work best with your style and body type, but at Vintage Fringe our theme for shopping is to find ways to incorporate and blend the vintage with the modern when shopping for anything vintage style.  Of course we typically shop for new clothing which is what we carry at our site and that is often the easiest vintage style clothing to find when shopping online, but if you are looking for true vintage peasant tops you can certainly find lots of vintage elements in such pieces.

One reason why we love the look of peasant tops right now is that they fit in so well with the great look of tunic length tops and leggings.  Finding tunic length peasant tops is really not that difficult and we love the look of the Keelin Squareneck Lace top by designer Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This longer length top features a loose fit and a retro square neckline accented with lace trim.  We love the puff sleeves and the gathered elastic near the hem for added flare.   This top is long enough that it would pair perfectly with leggings or with a cute pencil skirt for spring and summer.

Another great peasant top style is the Celestine Boatneck top by designer Ella Moss.  This loose fitting top is sheer and looks great over tank tops for added accent.  With a ruffle around the neckline and elastic at the base of the sleeves, this top is super feminine and still has that vintage style to it.  The Celestine Boatneck also features a tie around the neckline that can be tied or worn loose depending on your personal preference.  The fabric also features a contrasting star pattern for added detail.  This top is available in both a Pink and a Green color which also bring some great vivid vintage style into play.

As you can see, peasant tops really do come in a variety of styles and there is not really a concrete one peasant style.  We love the look of the looser fit over a tighter fitting tank or leggings for added contrast to your outfit.  Best of all, the peasant top really is a distinctive way to incorporate your own style into your wardrobe as there really isn’t a cookie cutter peasant top style.  They also typically are so feminine that they are great statement pieces for both casual and special occasions so in the current economy they are a great piece to include knowing that you won’t feel guilty because this top will last you for many seasons to come.

Shop for Spring Outerwear

Inevitably, it is that time of year to shop for spring outerwear or jackets.  There are naturally a variety of different jacket alternatives for spring ranging from the denim jacket for the masses to the stylish light weight bomber or trench coat.

This spring, one of the biggest fashion trends is the Trench coat.  This classic jacket is available this season in a variety of different trench coat styles and patterns which if you are like us will make it hard to narrow down which one is the best style for you.  We’ve seen trench coats with ruffles, stripes, polka dots and other patterns, or even just simple solid colors like khaki or black as the basic styles.  The other variation is in the lengths.  The most popular look is a length that falls just above the knees and incorporates ruffles or added feminine details like buttons.   These jackets are truly timeless and with certain details can be brand new, but full of vintage style.   A good trench coat is really a must have jacket for spring and summer so every stylish shopper should have at least one in their closet.

If you are looking for something less dressy or more casual consider a couple of our favorite jackets that are perfect lightweight jacket alternatives that are great for spring or really cold evenings in summer.  Designer Zooey by Alice Heller features a couple of great sweatshirt thickness jackets in different styles like the Cropped Double Breasted Jacket featuring lots of buttons for detail and a belt around the waist which really keeps with the latest trend with skinny belts.  This jacket features a wide collar and a faux waistband underneath the belt.

Alternatively, Zooey’s Cropped Bomber Jacket is also a great statement jacket.  This jacket truly blends vintage and modern elements.  With pockets in front, big buttons, and a cowl neckline, the bomber jacket brings a lot of great detail to a seemingly simple jacket style.  Of course, in my opinion, what really makes the Zooey jacket stand out is the arched hemline in back.  This accent really makes the jacket.   Giving the jacket a distinctive look, this detail in back makes the jacket a wonderful piece to accent variations in lengths and layers.  We love wearing this jacket with long tops or even tank tops depending on the season.  As you can see, with all of this detail, it is easy to wear this jacket as part of your entire outfit for the day and as more than just a jacket you wear outside.   Again this jacket features sweatshirt weight cotton and is machine washable which is another favorite for spring jackets.

Each of these is a great option for Spring jackets, but there are lots of other alternatives out there and ultimately you have to choose the style that works best for you.  We definitely love the versatile options of the lighter weight trench coat and the alternatives of the more casual yet equally hip bomber jacket in lieu of the jean jacket that we have worn for years now.

Finding similar vintage style pieces has really been made easier with the advent of online shopping as many online boutiques and other online sites make vintage styles far more accessible and available.   You can search by color, by style elements like polka dots, patterns or empire waist tops all via the internet as a whole or via more targeted sites such as like.com, boutiques.com, pronto.com and so many other search portal sites.  In fact, you can even find clothes now available at major search sites like pricegrabber.com.

Note that we are not including used vintage pieces in this definition.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with finding great second hand pieces it is just far more difficult to do and shopping for such pieces is typically best done in person shopping at consignment stores or great second hand stores.  We suggest shopping for second hand pieces in person so that you can personally examine the quality of the piece and the fit.  There are lots of ways to get ripped off buying used clothing online.  Accordingly, at Vintage Fringe we only feature clothing that is brand new, of high quality and from designers which feature standard sizing.

Picking out an outfit for a date night can be especially frustrating.  Solving the “what should I wear?” crisis is never fun, but it can certainly be a bit easier.  Consider a few of these great show stopper outfits as possible solutions to the date night dress dilemma.

First up is the Burca dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This dress features a great boat neckline and added details like a big silver zipper in back.  The dress is also tapered so it fits tighter at the waist than around the bustline.  The modern look is perfect for that date night and the slinky rayon fabric is to die for.  Wearing this over leggings as a tunic for a more casual look or with high boots gives you multiple options to help make this dress even more versatile.  Ideal date night occasions for this dress include: dinner at your favorite fancy restaurant, or art gallery or museum event.

Next up consider the Dita V Neck Ruffle Dress by designer Ella Moss.  This great dress has a vintage style that always reminds us of something you’d see on the show Mad Men.  With ruffles accenting the deep v neck line and the dress flares at the waist.  Of course we love the vintage style polka dot pattern too.  A great dress for a number of occasions which will help make sure you get your money’s worth out of this dress.  Ideal date night occasions for this dress include:  the theatre, weddings and just about any other party.

Next consider the Modal Jersey Scoop Neck Dress by Splendid.  This dress is elegant and simple with the ruffles around the neckline and the racerback detail in back.  With simple lines and a classic look, this dress is versatile and elegant.  As its name denotes it is made with modal jersey fabric which is the perfect blend of luxurious and comfortable.  It is machine washable, yet so soft to the touch that you really hate to take it off.  Ideal date night occasions for this dress include:  summer barbeque and dinner and a movie.

Finally, consider another statement dress with the Doreen Cut Out Dress by Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  This dress in a beautiful purple color called Gazelle.  Featuring cutouts in the sleeves at the base of the shoulders, this dress has a surprising modernity that we adore.  Part sleeves of Velvet’s Gauzy Whisper collection, this dress features a lightweight cotton, it is lined and gives you a perfect classy dress with a slight twist or edge.  We love the look of this dress again with high boots in a contrasting grey or other bold color and of course this dress looks elegant in your favorite pair of statement heels.  Ideal date night occasions for this dress include: the theatre, dinner out, art gallery and any party /event.

Fashion Trend: Charm Necklaces

All fall and winter your neck was covered with adorable scarfs or turtlenecks.  Now that it’s springtime, it is time to decorate your neck with a little bling vintage style.  Double strand necklaces are the perfect fashion statement for you neck- especially with a boat-neck style top.  To go purely vintage check out Chanel’s clear crystal sautoir.

Chanel's Vintage Extra Long Clear Crystal Sautoir

Chanel's Vintage Extra Long Clear Crystal Sautoir

While this vintage piece is exquisite some of us may not have the $1,495 dollars to spend.  If that is the case maybe you will like my interpretation of this necklace.  Retailing for a very reasonable $30 dollars.

Jewelry Designer Rosanne Follman's Double Strand Charm Necklace

Jewelry Designer Rosanne Follman's Double Strand Charm Necklace

Vintage Fringe exclusively is selling  jewelry designer Rosanne Follman’s double strand charm necklace. I love the use of soft green mother of pearl shells along with silver charms to create a beautiful vintage inspired, but very fashion forward piece.  The length of this necklace is 24 inches, it is a  copper chai with a toggle clasp.

I would pair this necklace with Velvet’s Daree Wide Sleeve Boatneck Top in Milk (ivory)

I think the mother of pearl green shells with silver would pair perfectly this with boatneck top designed by Velvet by Graham and Spencer.  What do you think? What would you pair this necklace with?

Ella Moss Clothing Vintage Style

Ella Moss Clothing

Ella Moss Clothing

Ella Moss Clothing is naturally known as a trendy, fashionable line for women, but at Vintage Fringe we also love how much of their line is impacted by vintage style.  For example, take this picture of Katherine Hepburn circa the 1940s.  Notice the puffy sleeves and the cinched center with the v neck.  All of these details are rampant in today’s modern fashions and many of them are found in recent designs from Ella Moss.

Check out the Ella Moss Puff Sleeve V Neck top; perhaps the best illustration of this Hepburn vintage style in modern application.  We love the cinched v neck, the puff sleeve and another application of another fashion trend as we mentioned in prior posts this awesome Smokey Purple Color.

This top is available at Vintage Fringe in this color, Ella Moss calls it Soot.  We love the look of this top and love the feminine touches as well as the homage to vintage style.  More importantly, we want to know what you think about this top and specifically these vintage style trends.

Sweet Pea Clothing Vintage Style

We’ve mentioned how much we love Sweet Pea Clothing’s patterns, but today we wanted to rave about one that we think is a great modern twist on a vintage style trend.  When we saw this dot pattern by Sweet Pea it reminded us of a pattern found less frequently today…the polka dot pattern.  We really like polka dots and while they can sometimes be overdone, we wish we saw them more often in modern styles.

Sweet Pea Dot Pattern Hoop Dolman Top

Sweet Pea Dot Pattern Hoop Dolman Top

This Sweet Pea dot pattern is unique with its different size dots on vines or branches in either a black, white, lime green and purple color scheme or in a navy, white, red and pink color scheme.  We love the contrasting colors and in particular love the line green mixed in with the purple and white.  Shown to the left in the Sweet Pea Hoop Dolman top, this style features lime green lining that you can see peeking out at the bottom. Don’t miss this pattern in Sweet Pea’s long sleeve drawstring empire waist top too.

If these colors aren’t your cup of tea, check out Sweet Pea’s long sleeve combo cuff crewneck in the same pattern in the blue / red color scheme.

We are wild about Sweet Pea at Vintage Fringe and now with one of their latest prints in this fashionable hoodie, you can be too.  We love the pattern.

A great twist on the ever-popular, but almost overdone animal prints, this bold Sweet Pea pattern takes a bold, but new approach with splashes of pink and gold along with the black and ivory.  With contrasting black trim at the bust creating a drawstring empire waist giving it that added feminine style.  And we can’t forget the hoodie, a fabulous Sweet Pea detail the interior of the hoodie is in contrasting solid black.

You’ll love the hoodie, the drawstring empire waist, and the v neck.  All of these things give us a number of reasons to love Sweet Pea brand clothing and the distinctive styles and patterns that keep us coming back for more!

This Sweet Pea top typifies the mission of Vintage Fringe to find feminine, trendy, vintage style designer clothing that is loaded with details and certainly not like every other top you’ll find at those chain stores.

Sweet Pea Apparel vs. AlixK – You decide

When we saw this picture of Grace Kelly wearing this elegant patterned top, at first it reminded us of a Sweet Pea topSweet Pea Apparel is an amazing designer and we love their vintage style.    In particular we love the unique prints that make their tops so distinctive and the combination of unique styles that make all of Sweet Pea’s tops look non-traditional, but elegant at the same time.

Sweet Pea Clothing

Then as we looked at this picture a little longer we thought it also reminded us of an AlixK top.  With AlixK’s signature handmade embroidery on each of its tops in patterns similar to that seen on Grace’s top, we couldn’t help but draw a comparison.

AlixK Apparel

When we wrote this entry we were torn as to which designer clothing item this reminded us of more.  Sweet Pea or AlixK?  And we couldn’t pick just one.  So in honor of the democratic country in which we live, we decided we would leave it up to the popular vote and let you decide.

Either way, we are pleased that at a minimum this Grace Kelly top just serves to remind us that much of Vintage Style truly is timeless.
